The next morning, I woke up, I headed downstairs and saw Johnny grabbing his jacket about to head out. I know that we sorted through some things last night, but it still hurts, knowing everything will be different. I know how he feels and he knows how I feel, yet we can't be together, not after what happened, not after the damage it left. That's not fair on either of us. One day, we will both completely move on from each other, when? I don't know, but if the universe pulls us together again, then so be it.
K: Hey stranger.
Johnny's POV
I look up as I'm walking towards the door. She's standing there across the room, looking perfect. Wearing my shirt and her messy hair. I missed her, I missed her so much over this past year and if I could take back anything, I would have never left her, because I should have made things right between us or at least said goodbye. I thought about her everyday, her face, her eyes, her smile. I wish it was back to us being together and happy. I wish we never split. But it happened, and now we both have to live with it. We both broke after all of it, and I don't want her to feel like that again.
J: Hey.
K: You heading out?
J: Uh yeah, wanted to get to my room before classes start.
K: Okay, uh I'll see you around.
J: Yeah.
*Johnny leaves
L: Well that was awkward.
K: How long were you standing there?
L: The entire time, what was he doing here?
K: We just talked all night, told him about what happened, he told me how he felt, and so did I.
L: Well considering how he left, you two aren't back together.
K: Lauren I can't, not after what happened.
L: It's been a while, I'm sure it won't go down like that again.
K: It doesn't matter, we ended on some bad terms, and I'll be damned if it happens again, I won't lose him forever. Besides, we'll move on, eventually.
L: That guy was in love with you, and from what I saw, he still is. You both are still in love with each other so why don't you just go for it, worst comes to worst-
K: We lose each other, I would rather him be in my life as a friend, than not be in my life at all.
L: You both are pulling away, and it's not fair to each other. You're both in love with each other.
K: It doesn't matter, Lauren, you don't get it.
*Meanwhile, With Johnny and Hunter.
H: So you spent the night with Kenzie?
J: How the hell do you even know that?
H: Lauren texted.
J: Well before you lose your pants, nothing happened, I slept in the guest room.
H: Then what happened?
J: We talked, about everything.
H: I take by the looks of it, you're not back-
J: Together? No. We talked and it's for the best if things are like this.
H: Ah bullshit, you both are in love with each other, and neither of you are doing anything about it. Why don't you just get up and ask her out?
J: Hayden, I haven't seen her in over a year, last time things ended, it ended on bad terms, and neither of us want that for each other again. Besides, we can just be friends.
H: We'll see, I'm willing to bet my money that you two end up together at least by the end of this year, or the beginning of next.
J: Whatever.
Kenzie's POV
After I had a long talk with Lauren, she finally decided to stop pushing. A few months had passed. Johnny and I were good friends, which made me super happy, well considering everything that happened. We finally got close again, and it was nice, it wasn't the same as us dating, but it was still nice. It was the last week before the end of the semester break, Hayden texted and we all decided to go out to lunch. We had a good time, I don't remember the last time the four of us were together. It was kinda like a double date, but not. After, Johnny took me on a moonlight walk on the beach, he tried to recreate the first time we did this.
K: Your sneaky, I wasn't expecting this.
J: You like it though?
K: Of course I do, it's like... The first time we went out on our not date.
J: Yeah, it is, and I liked that night.
K: Me too.
J: I really missed this.
K: So did I.
J: I'm not leaving again, that's my promise to you. I know neither of us owe each other anything, but I promise you, I'm here to stay.
K: I like the sound of that.
And I believed him, I soaked up every word he said like it was poison on my tongue. We headed home soon after that. Johnny walked me to my apartment right after Hayden dropped off Lauren. He said goodnight and left a kiss on my forehead.
L: You ready to head to bed?
K: Ugh finally.
*The morning
L: Hey did the mail come in?
K: Yeah. *Flipping through mail* Here you go.
L: Anything for you?
K: Yeah I got a letter.
*Opens door
H: Have either of you seen Johnny? He didn't come to his dorm last night and it's all cleaned up.
K: I think I may know where he is. *Holds up letter*
I still remember the warm brush of his lips against my skin. And he left. I never thought it would be the last time I saw him for the next two years. I guess he never really was good at keeping his promises. It doesn't matter how much I changed him, or how much of a good influence I had on him, or how much he supposedly cared about me.
