Chapter Six:

I ended up getting the riddle wrong and I wondered what would have happened if I had gotten it right, however I had a terrible feeling that even if I had gotten it right I would still be made to do the demon's next task. I felt like this was becoming inevitable; that I would be stuck running around killing people for the demon. I wanted to ask why he couldn't do the tasks himself as he was a demon and that is what demons are known for - they ruthlessly kill people themselves. I then wondered if maybe this particular demon didn't like getting his hands dirty and preferred having a guinea pig to run around for him.

"Alright young one, since you lost I'm going to give you the next task." He took a step closer he was standing right in front of me now, he had never stood this close to me and this honestly scared me. "I want you to kill someone else."

I wanted to protest, to scream out, lunge myself at him but I couldn't. It was like I was frozen, stuck and not able to do anything as if the demon was controlling me right now. My suspicions only became reality - that the demon was in fact controlling me - when I spoke up, saying something that I didn't want to say.

"Who will I be killing this time, sir?"

The demon chuckled and walked away from me. With a content sigh he spoke, "You know young one I am glad that you are doing all this for me, it's so kind of you."

It's not like I have a choice.

"So this time it's a woman and just like Rick she did something horrible. You'll probably find her down a back alley down shakespeare street with a bottle of vodka, or maybe wine whatever she fancies that day. Don't worry however, just see it as putting her out of her misery - although she doesn't deserve being put of her misery she should suffer but she needs to be killed."

"Why do you make me kill these people? Like, what have they done to you?"

The demon smirked. "Oh, absolutely nothing. I just like people being killed, it's fun isn't it not? Besides, what's it to you what they've done?"

I gulped. I should have kept my mouth shut and left the question unanswered but what was most uneasy about this situation was that the demon wasn't mad or annoyed at the prying question. I just put it down to the fact that this was the first time that I had spoken up to him.

"It's- you always say that they've done something terrible and I just wondered if this was just you sorting out some vendetta."

"Oh no Nathan." He shook his head. I gulped again as he used my name rather than 'young one'. "There's no vendetta, I just get people killed because it's fun!"

His face became serious again. "Now don't question me again!"

"Nathan, are you okay?" Jay shook me. "Nath, babe?"

I nodded, taking in a deep breath trying to calm down my beating heart. "Yes I'm fine Jay, just another of those bad dreams."

Jay sighed and wrapped his arms around me pulling me closer to his warm body. "You know, I wish I could take those dreams away and I would if I could."

"I know Jay." I mumbled.

"How come you never talk about your nightmares? You always keep the details locked away and you never tell me anything about them, wouldn't it be better if you spoke about it?" Jay questioned and afterwords he looked guilty but I didn't blame him for asking.

I shook my head. "No. That would make it worse, it would mean I'd have to deal with at all again."

Jay nodded as if he understood but I knew he didn't. Nobody did.

"Okay, that's understandable." Jay cleared his throat then asked the question that I had been dreading. "Can we at least talk about that demon you saw before?"

"What demon?" I played the stupid card, hoping that we wouldn't have to talk about seeing the demon before. I wasn't ready or willing to talk about it. Not now. Not ever.

"Don't play dumb with me Nathan." He scolded. He sounded like he was a parent telling of their child. "Tell me about the demon, I won't judge you if that's what you're worried about. Just tell me." His tone was much softer now but I could still detect the authority in his voice.

I bit my lip I had to tell him. He wouldn't let this drop and there's no way that I could get around this. I couldn't lie about it as he would find out from my horrible lying.

"Fine, I'll tell you." I reluctantly told him. "But promise not to judge me, okay?"

"I promise."
