Erica tugged on my hand and I shook myself from my reverie. Erica and I ran down out of the apartment, ignoring the cries from Peter and Stiles. Erica tossed a helmet at me that I stuffed my head into roughly before swinging my leg over her bike and clasping her waist tight. The bike tore down the road, Erica ignoring all speed limits and running about four red lights until we got to the bank. We called out for everyone but got no response.
"They should be near here... They can't have gotten that far..." I reasoned.
Erica gave me a glance. "Werewolves... Remember? They could be anywhere in the woods right now!"
A sharp scream punctured through the silence of the woods. Erica sprung the bike back into action, tearing up the muddy paths of the woods. The screams continued frantically and grew louder as Erica drove closer until they came to a disturbingly abrupt stop. I glanced at Erica; she looked as alarmed as I was.
"Go off the track?" I asked, sliding off the bike. I held my hand out for Erica to take, which she did gladly and I pulled her off the bike. Erica hastily stowed her bike behind a tree and we made our way through the trees to where we'd heard the screaming. The ground under us wasn't littered with leaves or made of mud so we made ground quickly.
"Erica?" I asked. "Do you think that scream was – "
"Boyd related? I hope to hell it wasn't..." She cut me off. "Do you see that light over there?" Erica pointed into the trees to her left at a faint orange glow. I nodded and we ran over toward it, ducking low branches and swerving around trees. The light was from a little A frame tent, with white canvas sheets that made its slopes, barely covering the light from inside.
"Hello?" I called, my eyes darting around the tiny clearing the campers had found.
We heard rustling from the bushes, and a girl our age stumbled out, her white sweater streaked with dirt. "Have you seen my girlfriend? Emily? She just ran off!"
We were about to shake our heads when the girl screamed and pointed behind us. I whipped around quick enough to see Boyd's claws strike. Pain burst from the four slashes down my chest and I stumbled back into a tree. I caught my breath whilst Erica and Boyd wrestled. I glanced at the wounds; they were only thin strips of crimson down my chest, no real harm done besides the initial pain. I grunted and pushed myself up before tackling Boyd off of Erica, managing to scrap with him for a while before being sent flying into the tent. I felt something smash underneath my weight. The canvas caught fire and I realised I must have broken some fancy glass candle holder. I raced to my feet and pushed the girl away from the fire. She stared at it in a shocked, glazed look.
Suddenly Boyd flew into a tree next to me, its bark buckling under his force. I looked up to see Scott and Erica snarling at Boyd's form.
"Get out of the woods! Now!" Scott ordered the girl. She took off screaming.
Boyd growled and ran off into the trees. Derek emerged from behind Scott and Erica and chased after his rogue beta, Scott following close after. Erica ran up to me and pushed me against a tree as she checked my chest. "You aren't hurt?" She demanded. I nodded in response. Erica grabbed my shoulder and hauled me after the three werewolves. We sprinted after them, soon finding them slumped up against a trunk of a fallen tree, Scott with his phone in his hand.
"Just check for me, okay?" Scott begged.
"The throat is pretty ripped out... It's only gonna be one thing Scott..." I made out over the line.
"Okay, thanks for letting me know..." Scott sighed and hung up.
"That doesn't make sense..." Derek complained. "The public pools are on the other side of the woods..."
