I groaned. It must have been about half eleven at night and I'd been waiting for Erica to finish her epilepsy check-up thing for so long that every corridor I'd wandered down in boredom had started to blend into each other. I took note of some of the nurses, their hair tied tight and their eyes bloodshot as they chugged their 'grande' coffees.
Why not just call it large?
Tonight seemed especially busy and I'd heard whisperings of a pile up just outside of town. I decided to head back to the lobby because surely, surely, Erica's epilepsy checkup or whatever it was must be done by now, I'd been here for like three hours. I made my way through the stuffy corridors and wrinkled my nose when I noticed that the air held a faint undertone of bleach. The sterile environment was just really unnerving to me, I was used to my brain going a million miles an hour and bouncing from topic to topic, here, there was nothing to focus on other than the fact that the walls were cream and the corners were scraped in places from the trolleys that must have bumped into them. The pictures on the walls were cheap prints of uplifting scenes like a meadow and stuff like that. I shook my head and followed the large, blue plastic signs that were above the double doors telling me what area of the hospital I was heading into. I noticed one that said reception and headed through it.
If I had said the hospital seemed busy before, it paled in comparison to the reception. The reception was chaos. Red and blue light flashed through the room as ambulances dropped off casualties off at the door and then sped off, presumably to collect another one at the pile up I'd been hearing about. I could count about fifteen people in wheelchairs clutching a limb or or joint and at least ten more that were okay enough to stand and suffer. I dodged out of the way of gurney holding a woman that clutched onto a wound on her shoulder that was bleeding heavily.
"Does anyone know where Doctor Hilyard is?" Melissa Mccall's shouts appeared to fall on deaf ears as she scrambled to talk to and console every patient in the waiting room.
"Miss Mccall, what's happened? Are you okay?" I asked, making her jump as I came from behind.
"Jeez Percy, don't sneak up on me like that!" She smiled. "Yeah, something like a ten car pile up, this is the only hospital they can get to, so I'm stressed out of my mind and hungry as hell! But Scott should be here seen with some takeout so..."
"Speak my name and I shall appear!" Scott laughed as he too snuck up on his Mom, shoving a bag full of food at her. "Everything alright here? Anything I can do? Hey Perce." Scott greeted me as an afterthought, rightfully more focused on the fact his Mom looked seconds away from a breakdown.
"Other than the fact that the hospital isn't big enough to accommodate all these patients and the ER attending not answering his pages? Yeah, I'm pretty good. Thank you for bringing me dinner by the way." Melissa massaged her temple and exhaled slowly.
I raised my hand awkwardly. "What does 'not answering pages' mean?"
Melissa smiled and almost laughed but settled on one of those stuttery exhales you do sometimes. "It means we can't find him, so now we have to wait for the On Call Doctor to get here, which is obviously quite hard because there's just been a ten car pile - "
"M - Miss?" A woman stumbled towards Melissa, who greeted her kindly. "Can I please get some painkillers, it's just hurting so much..."
Melissa's smile slipped. "I'm sorry but we can't give you any because it could complicate things..." Melisa trailed off as she helped the woman find a seat.
"Scott? Are you gonna do the thing?" I turned to ask him, only to find him already knelt in front of the woman, clutching her hand and promising her that it would be okay as his veins popped out and turned dark. The woman's face visibly relaxed and she gave a muted sigh of relief. Scott smiled and got to his feet. I caught him as he stumbled.
