The lake lay flat as a mirror and the low moon sent light bouncing off the silvery-black water and streaking across our faces. The lake's muddy banks were packed full of small pebbles that made walking in my flat converse shoes uncomfortable. We had emerged from the treeline around fifteen metres back and I had been stunned how quiet the area was. If only I had found this place earlier, I could have taken Erica on a picnic here or something...
Annabeth reached out towards me, her hand outstretched expectedly. I stared at her blankly. She groaned. "Phone..."
"How was I supposed to know that?" I grumbled, fishing the phone out of my pocket. Annabeth snatched it out of my hand and walked a little faster. "You need my passcode."
Annabeth waved my unlocked phone at me and stuck her tongue out before lowering her head again and messing about on it. "Miss Blake texted you on the first day? It was her first lesson?"
"Yeah, it was a line from Heart of Darkness or something... I didn't do the reading, I don't know what it's about." I scratched the back of my neck.
Annabeth grinned up at me playfully. "Didn't do it or couldn't?"
I allowed myself a smile.
"Seaweed Brain..." Annabeth muttered to herself affectionately.
"So why do you need my phone?" I asked after a little while of silence.
"Oh, I need to lure her here, I texted her saying that you were willing to sacrifice yourself and it -"
"WHAT?"
Annabeth's eyes widened. "No! Not for real! We bring her here, she tries to sacrifice you and we ambush her!"
"And how do we know she'll come?"
"Two reasons, I said in the text that your sacrifice would be powerful, so the mystery element of what you are will probably intrigue her, and more importantly, you're 'sacrificing' yourself willingly, which is definitely going to be better for her."
Annabeth groaned at the suspicious look I gave her. "Percy, we kill the druid lady, we get a car and we go back to New York. That is the plan. I'm not trying to kill you! Why would I be trying to kill you!? You know I love you!" Annabeth faltered and looked up at me, her lip trembling. "Right...?"
I knew it was a guilt trip but I still felt compelled to comfort her. "No I know... I just... What about my friends?"
"They're in New York waiting for you to come back." Annabeth said, leaving little room for argument.
I threw my head back and sighed. "Annabeth... I..."
"You're lucky I'm helping them! You should be grateful! They'd be fucked without my plan! Scott would probably be with that blind guy and the rest of them would have no clue what to do! They're saving the parents whilst we stop Miss Blake, would you prefer I just let the parents die?"
"I just don't get why you're helping them! You've made it very clear you don't care about anything other than me!"
Annabeth recoiled, disgusted. "Who do you think I am? I'm not evil, and from what you've said they aren't hurting anyone, why wouldn't I help?"
"Because... I don't know, I guess I just assumed you were focused on getting me back then you'd just leave them to pick up the pieces... I'm sorry, I shouldn't - "
"Percy. We've already won, helping a couple teenagers is no skin off my back!"
I faltered. "Annabeth, you're confusing me. I thought you didn't like my friends? What do you mean we've won?"
