CHAPTER THREE

Mel said good bye when my dad entered the room. She rolled her eyes at me making me smile.

"Hi Mr. Bennet," she chirped and my dad looked at her, his forehead crinkling. I smothered a laugh. She liked irking my dad.

Dad's eyes darted to me before it came back to Mel's poker face. The crinkles grew imminent. "Ms. Norman."

I snorted and Mel winked at me, not trying to be subtle. She was about to get out when dad called her. "Thank you." He called to her.

She looked back at him and her face softened. Mel is a gorgeous girl, with her strawberry blonde hair and olive eyes, and is extremely intelligent. She's a cardio-thoracic surgeon after all. I always teased her having God's hand, she's a great surgeon.

After Mel went out, dad walked towards me and I smiled at him tenderly. How could I not see that in his eyes, my dad loved me. I was too young then and all I could see was my own loneliness. I hope I just realized this sooner then maybe I have been closer to my dad. "Hi dad,"

"Vanessa," he traced my hairline with his fingertips and kissed my forehead. I closed my eyes and let his warmth wash over me. "How are you feeling?"

"Better now," I said to him and he sat at the bedside chair provided for my visitors. "How about you?"

He smiled fractionally, "Better now."

I rolled my eyes and caressed his cheek. "Have you been sleeping lately dad? You look like...hell?" I supplied, grinning sheepishly at him.

Pain flashed in his eyes and I knew those bags under his eyes were because of me. "But you're still like a GQ model though. How's that?" I asked and he shook his head, showing me how amusing I am.

"Who shot you Vanessa? There were two dead men at the warehouse where they detained you. Was there somebody else aside from Alejandro's men?" He jumped right to the main topic of his visit, huh.

"Geez dad, can't we just enjoy my impromptu leave from work? I am thinking of hitting the beach," I trailed thoughtfully and dad squeezed my arm.

"Vanessa, this is important." The smile left my face. Didn't he think I knew that quite perfectly well?

"No, there wasn't somebody else. They had a fight, then one guy shot the two and I took that opportunity to run away. A woman came after me and shot me. I continued running and that was when I got hit by the car. That's all that I could remember." I lied and closed my eyes.

"Woman? You remember how she looked?" Dad asked and I looked at him again.

"Her name is June, she has a red hair..." I described how she looked and dad nodded.

"I hired a private bodyguard for you, Vanessa. We couldn't let this happen again while the police is hunting Alejandro Motreal down. This is all my fault. I should've had him killed then to finish all this."

"Kill him? No dad, you wouldn't do that because what would be our difference from him? He's crazy." I told him fiercely and we held each other's eyes.

A moment later, he closed his eyes and jerked his chin. "You are right." He said and I took his hand and brought it to my lips.

"I love you dad," I murmured and I caught his eyes. I saw how his face softened and the wrinkles beside his eyes deepened. I knew he wouldn't say it back. Dad never said it back but I knew he loves me too. "So, private bodyguard? Really dad? As if I don't know how you are keeping an eye on me all these years." I said with mild exasperation. I knew dad has somebody following me, keeping me safe and reporting me to him. Alex told me so, he was the one who noticed it.
