CHAPTER THIRTEEN
"Why can't we just go straight to the police?" I asked, growing more frustrated the longer we drove through the seemingly endless deserted road. Dawn had broken free from the clouds and casted orange tint to everything.
June shot me a disgusted look as if I just asked her the dumbest question that could ever be formulated in the planet. "Of course we can!"
She was being sarcastic but a short relief rushed through me from the idea of being safe even for a while. There was something obvious I was missing here though.
She looked at me again and shook her head as she returned her attention back to the road. "Just say it!" I snapped.
Her tone was placating as she spoke and it never ceased to amaze me how could she show me how much she didn't like me in everything that she do. "We go straight to the police station, there are two possible things that could happen," she paused for effect, "Alex and I can be apprehended and you will be delivered back to your father safe and sound wrapped up in a gift box, ribbon and all."
"That's not that bad," I commented making her snort. "What's the second possibility?"
"Or Alex and I can be killed on the spot and you will be delivered to the devil himself. The rest, I won't be alive to witness but you will be." There was a dark bitterness lining her voice as she spoke and my heart thumped noticeably inside my chest.
"That's bad." I muttered, my throat suddenly dry.
"Alejandro Motreal has connections even to those authorities you thought were gonna save you. How do you think he'd never been arrested all these years?" That scared me, so much that everything my dad had done to protect me seemed worthless at that moment. How could this possibly end if even the police were powerless against that man? How could I get back the normalcy in my life?
A sense of hopelessness filled the spaces in my heart and fear clouded my senses. "You said he is your father," I swallowed the thick lump lodging at the base of my throat, "why would he want to kill you?"
June laughed but the sound was hollow, humorless and even bitter. "He is my biological father and that's that. I was nothing but a pawn he used."
I looked at her and studied June for the first time since meeting her --- looking at her more carefully. How could I not see that? Those sadness in her eyes, I perfectly knew it because I had it in my own eyes since I could remember. She longed for his love but I am afraid that man wasn't capable of such humanly emotion.
"And I betrayed him." She said as an afterthought.
"Alex," I fell short for words as the realization of it knocked the breath out of me.
We lurched forward as she forcefully stomped on the break pedal. Her hands shook as she gripped the steering wheel with so much force it wouldn't be a surprise if it snapped under her palms. I braced myself against the dashboard, blinking from shock.
"Are you trying to kill us?" I shouted as I gathered my wits.
She was glaring murderously at me, "Can't you just stop talking?" She shouted as angrily.
We stared at each other as the air thickened inside the car. It was suffocating. "Are you---"
"Stop talking or I'll make you. I swear to God!" She bit out with so much angst that my mouth shut.
I decided to leave it at that and think about it for some other time. Something much more important had popped inside my head that I needed answers to, this could be my only chance. "Tell me one thing,"
