CHAPTER EIGHT

When I woke up, Jack was still lumbering woods in his sleep. And apparently he was the lumberjack. I didn't know that he snored. My lips lifted up in a smile as I watched his chest rise and fall in every breath he took. I placed my palm to his chest and watched my hand go with the movement, my skin was lighter in contrast to his tanned skin. This was precious, every breath and every beat of his heart, all of these were precious and this was the reason why I never came back to the ranch. Then I wondered why I was thinking this way.

With a sigh, I carefully pried myself away from him and padded my way to the bathroom, tip toeing. I didn't want to think about how dirty was the floor.

I rummaged through the plastic bag he brought last night and saw a size ten jeans and a white t-shirt. There was also a disposable underwear but still, no bra. Fortunately he also bought me flip flops. I looked back at the bed with wide eyes. I found it really sweet he bought me something clean to wear. I looked down at the sweater I was wearing and thought maybe this was the clothe he bought for himself. His sweetness tugged at my heartstring.

I took the clothes and soundlessly padded my way to the bathroom, but of course, the door creaked. I winced as Jack woke up in a start and adeptly took his gun from under his pillow, un clutched the safety and pointed it at my direction. Wow he was in a survivor mode. I raised both of my hands in a surrender gesture, causing my clothes to fall on the floor.

The fog of sleep cleared from his eyes and his eyebrows met in a frown. "Vanessa?"

I smiled sheepishly, shrugging my shoulders, "Yeah it's me! Welcome back from the lumbering world Jack."

"Lumbering world?" He asked and hid his gun away from me. I sighed in relief and immediately took my clothes from the floor.

I smiled at him, "Never mind." I said, went inside the bathroom and locked the door. Then it wouldn't close properly, I laughed. I forgot, he kicked this door open last night.

I was dressed when I got out of the bathroom and saw Jack standing in front of the window, peering over the partially opened blinds. I studied his back and noticed he grew broader, his back looked hard from his muscles and he looked luscious. I shook my head, how in the world did his ex wife stomach losing such a hot piece of man?

Jack sensed my presence and he nodded his head to me. I snorted, he was acting all macho again. He continued to talk in the phone but I didn't bother eavesdropping. Besides, his voice was low and rumbly I could hardly make out anything.

I went to Axl and cuddled my cat. Poor kitty, he hadn't eaten anything yet. I frowned and thought about asking Jack if we could buy cat foods. And when would I be able to come back to my house? A headache started to pound in my head just thinking about the mess my house was currently in. I still need to think about the insurance company and all that.

I didn't realize I was staring at space and got startled when Jack's strong fingers started massaging my temples. I caught his eyes and saw the tenderness back to his face. My heart recognized the familiar warmth and started jumping inside my chest. I didn't want to feel this way.

"I can't wrap my mind around it." I told him and he nodded, squatting in front of me, what he didn't do was to stop massaging my temples. The foreboding headache slowly eased away. I sighed in pleasure.

"To what?" He asked, his voice was soft. Axl's head perked up and started rubbing his head to Jack's chest.

I smiled warily, "To everything. To my house, my dad, Mel, they must be dying from worry."

"I called your dad last night to check in. He is worried but he is busy completing his part into bringing Motreal down." He told me and stopped massaging my temples. He sat on his behind on the floor.
