CHAPTER TWENTY SIX
It was past one when Jack received a phone call which tipped his world upside down.
It was Alexis Weizman.
"Alejandro Motreal escaped the Chicago PD, contact Vanessa and fucking contact your person in NYPD." Jack was already up from the bed of the hotel room he paid for four full days, his heart was trying to engrave a mark on his ribs.
"Talk." He bit off, walking towards his bag and stuffing all his belongings there. He was going back to NY tonight and hope to God Vanessa was still at Melissa's house.
"Killed six police officers, one detective. Got men infiltrate the cell and took him out. He's fucking wind." Alexis said in a strained voice and Jack felt his blood turn cold.
"Fuck!" He exploded, his hand finding the glass paperweight from the center of the round table where he laid out his files, which he was gathering, then hurled it across the room. It shattered upon colliding to the wall, the crash and sound of the breaking glass was too loud, enough for Alexis to hear it from the other end of the line.
"Keep your head together, Jackson." Alexis warned in a growl but the ringing in Jack's ears was making it hard to find cool.
"Goddamnit! He's a dead man and he thinks he has nothing left to lose. He knew it and this is a desperate move. He's after Vanessa." The fear's clutch to his heart was too tight Jack felt like choking.
"You on the move?" Alexis clarified and he too seemed to be driving. "I'm near, where is Vanessa? Is she with Mel?"
It pained Jack but at this moment, he needed Alexis' help. "Yes. Take her and keep her safe." He said despite the heavy lead inside his chest.
"One more thing," Alexis' voice dipped lower and something in his voice made Jack stop dead, his other hand on the door knob, his duffel bag hanging precariously on his shoulder.
Jack's silence encouraged Alexis to speak, "June, she's the intel."
Jack's eyes drifted close as the lead in his chest dropped to his stomach and he gripped the doorknob harder, his knuckles turning white as he braced himself.
"June Motreal, Vanessa's sister?" He didn't have to ask but he was so dumbfounded his brain had stopped working.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
"She's been a spy all along." Alas, Jack had finally put a name at that ugliness from Alexis' voice. Betrayal. The man was betrayed and fuck if Vanessa learn about this she would be crushed. She didn't talk about it but Jack knew Vanessa trusted that woman.
"Fuck," Jack didn't know what to say and apparently, Alexis didn't expect anything from him either.
"Check on you later." Alexis ended the call and that spurred Jack to get a move as well so he went out of the hotel room, dialing Vanessa's number. The pounding of his heart intensified when after eight rings, his call was transferred to a voicemail.
"Damn it!" He muttered under his breath, his pace quickening as he couldn't go down the stairs faster.
He called Cain next.
"Man what the fuck! I've been trying to reach you!" Cain said upon answering and Jack's body became numb. God, let Alexis not be too late to get Vanessa safe.
"What the fuck happened?" Jack bit off through his hard jaw, saliva pooled at the base of his mouth as the dread filled his system.
"NYPD received signal from Norman's residence. Units were dispatched and so's an ambulance," acid coursed through his veins. No. Alejandro Motreal has a flair for drama, he wouldn't just kill Vanessa on the spot, he told himself repeatedly. "Dr. Melissa Norman was shot on the stomach."
