CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR
"Are you sure about this?" Paige asked with worry written all over her face.
We were sitting at her comfortable sofa in her living room, cups of steaming coffees in our hands. I went here to say good bye to Paige since she couldn't go at the ranch as often as she could since she had to go back to work if she didn't want to get laid off.
"No," I answered truthfully. I understood her concern, even Jack was hesitant when I told him that I wanted to go back to NYC. He told me it was like offering myself in a silver platter. "But I don't have a choice, Paige."
"Yes you do, you can stay here and let everything play out. Let Jack do what he is doing to stop that sonovabitch." She said in a huff, all worked up.
I smiled, tilting my mug so the fluid swirled. "I don't want to hide here. Motreal couldn't drive me into hiding forever and I might as well start showing him that now. I'm not afraid of him anymore, Paige, I am so done being scared."
She frowned, "Besides, I have a life in NY, just like you I couldn't postpone my life just because of him. I have to continue living it."
"You're going back to New York for good? Damn, second good byes suck just as much as the first." Paige muttered.
"I told Jack I would be happy to spend the rest of my life here." I was talking softly as the warmth that had resided inside my chest started to do its magic again. Paige's head snapped up as her large, round eyes met mine.
"You're not serious," she breathed.
I chuckled, "So I am going back to New York to sort everything out so I could start my life here in Texas with that man."
"You guys are going to get married soon?" She was still talking in a breathy voice that made me chuckle more but her question didn't fail to make my heart skip a beat.
Jack and I hadn't talked about that far as we planned our lives. He hadn't even mentioned that. Sure, he seemed so happy I wasn't wearing Alex's ring anymore and he called me his woman so many freaking times I could die a happy woman right then and there, but he never mentioned marriage.
He was married once and it didn't go very well. He never really talked about it, except that one time when he informed me about it. But that's that, no stories of what really went down, what went wrong, how he felt. Where was his ex-wife now? Did they have kids? My heart squeezed painfully at the last thought and I shook it away, not wanting to overthink.
If he had kids he would have told me by now, right?
"We haven't talked about that, Paige." I murmured.
Her frown deepened, "Why?"
"Why what?" I asked, founding her course of questioning a little bit amusing.
"Why haven't the two of you talked about getting married and settling down?" She asked, growing more impatient.
"I don't know, Paige." I said condescendingly but when her facial expression grew dark, I hurried, "And we're not on a rush. I haven't even talked to Alex, my fiancé."
She rolled her eyes, "Don't you think you have wasted enough time to take it slow now?"
I chuckled, "This isn't even the right time to think about such thing since nothing is settled down in my life yet. Let's take it easy, okay?"
"Whatever, Nessa." She muttered, her expression clearing as she let it go.
However, it brought questions in my head that I had decided to discuss with Jack.
