CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

"What's up with the grand dinner?" Mel asked when she entered her dining room and saw what I had on her table.

Grinning wide, I placed the opened champagne bottle on the table and went to her. Mel was taking her coat off when I stopped in front of her and then she threw it on one of her island stools.

"A celebratory dinner for the two of us." I told her, smiling.

She gave me a brief hug and then looked at the platters of chicken alfredo, bufallo wings and steak all set on her dining table then back to me, a smile quirking at her lips. I was staying in her place as Jack was doing some business he didn't elaborate with me but I knew has something to do with Motreal. It has only been two days since he left me here and he always checked on me, besides Mel's house security was directly connected to NYPD dispatch so it was safe. Jack made it so.

"Okay," Mel said, drawing out the word as she sat on one of the chairs and I followed her and poured champagne on her flute and then to mine, filling it half way. "And champagne. The last time we had a champagne was after you selected a wedding gown."

I smiled at the memory, ignoring the slight pinch of its remembrance. Alex had never contacted me after we talked, and it has been a week already. I was losing hope that maybe we could work this out and stay at each other's lives. Maybe it was just too much to ask.

I remained silent even after I sat comfortably across Mel to her circular table that could sit three people.

"So sometime this year?" Mel asked impatiently, gesturing her flute to me and I grinned widely.

"I was watching TV earlier." I started.

Mel snorted, "I'm surprised, Nes, what else?"

"And I just heard the greatest news of my life," I trailed and grinned even wider upon the look at Mel's face. She knew this was good so she was bracing herself and she was also very impatient.

"God you're enjoying this too much! Just tell me what it is!" She exclaimed, leaning over me, her eyes gleaming.

"They apprehended Alejandro Motreal yesterday on his residence in Chicago, Mel. He's behind bars. They said they were able to raid four of his operations and they arrested him for drug dealing and money laundering. And there's a lot more that he will be sentenced for life, Jack told me. They will expose everything that he did, all the murders that he ordered." I didn't even realize that I was talking softly but I was so focused on this happy bubble inside my chest that kept on expanding and expanding.

It was a glorious feeling.

Mel's lips parted as she just kept on staring at me and tears had started to well beneath my eyelids. Because, seriously, this was such a big news. Alejandro Motreal did so much bad things to my life and the people around me. And what about the lives of other people that I didn't know? He just caused too much pain and destruction it was about time for him to end.

Finally.

Mel reached out across the table and opened up her palm to me. I understood what she meant so I laid my hand atop of hers which she immediately squeezed tight and she held my eyes.

"He's your father." She said carefully.

"He's not anything to me, Mel. He's never a father to me because my father is at my childhood home, working his heart out or maybe celebrating too just like us. That man there is my father."

Her eyes were soft, "He is your father."

I didn't like what she was trying to say and I didn't like this nagging feeling that I was able to bury deep in my brain all day. But it resurfaced now because of her words and I didn't like it any less.
