CHAPTER TWELVE

I felt like I was floating in a vast space of nothingness. I wasn't really asleep though my eyes were closed and my body felt heavy. I was vaguely aware of the small room we were in, the soft buzz of the air-conditioning unit or the irritating ticking sound of an insect. I was so tired I am technically dead on my feet but my brain wouldn't allow me to rest.

In its defense, I do have a lot of things to think about. If I could run anyone's money about how messy my state of mind was now, I'd be able to build my own damn hospital. So I tried to sort my thoughts, and then nothing. All of a sudden, my brain felt as though it was stuffed with cotton. It was frustrating.

I was conjuring an image of me with a baseball bat in one hand ready to smash some sense on a virtual another me, when I felt a rough push from my shoulder.

My eyes flew open and I saw a silhouetted hip in front of me. I blinked and sat right up, rubbing my eyes. They were sore.

"Stand up and get ready we're surrounded." June told me in a hushed, urgent voice and I immediately took account of my surrounding while I blindly searched for my chucks from under the bed. Alex was plastered on the door, straining his ears against the wooden door, his gun poised in front of his chest.

The room was dark and I couldn't hear anything or anyone aside from us. But what do I know? I'm a doctor, not a freaking Charlie's Angel. June was also holding a gun and I wish I had something to occupy my hand with too.

"There are at least seven of them outside." Alex told us in an above whisper voice which was rough and a little husky from sleep. "We have to get you out of here, Van." Alex continued and the nickname caused my heart to spitter patter. It felt like forever since I heard that coming from his mouth.

"How are we going to get out of that door?" I whispered, pulling my shoulder length hair up in a pony tail.

"We can't go out there without being filled with holes." June answered me, and those words registered in my head as: 'Can you get any more stupid?'

I made a face, glad that the darkness hid my expression. "So where are we going to exit without getting drilled with bullets?" I asked snidely at the know-it-all bitch beside me. Of course my statement was translated as: 'Nobody's asking you bitch.'

Before she could even retort and I saw her open her mouth, Alex spoke stopping her effectively. I smirked at her, knowing she could sense it. "Both of you get out from the window and make your way to the emergency stairs."

My brows knitted, "We're on the fourth floor and this building doesn't really have terraces." I quickly made my way to the said window, opened it carefully so as not to make a noise. We were in the far most side of the building so the banister of the emergency stair's could be reached from the window. Heh, this room was smartly chosen. I remembered Jack always choosing the farthest room and this must be the reason for it.

"Why, you scared of falling flat on that face? It wouldn't change anything, in case you're worried. Falling, that is." June mocked and my head whipped on her direction, my eyes narrowing in slits.

"Try not to kill each other." Alex interrupted our staring contest. "I'll distract them and you two get the hell out of here. Take the car, it's parked half a block away and I'll contact you."

"No! We won't leave you." I said, aghast by the absurdity of it. If Alex was right, there could be eight people with guns out there and it wasn't possible for him to defeat all of them or leave this building unscathed. I mean, Alex wasn't James Bond or anything.

"This isn't up for a discussion, Vanessa."

"I am telling you that won't happen. You have to think of something else that won't include you being a decoy." I crossed my arms across my chest.
