CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

That morning, I woke up feeling as light as a feather just as I slept with an even lighter heart. And for what felt like the first time in a hundred years, I didn't dread waking up.

It has been days after I entered the barn and something changed in me. They noticed it too and that delighted Paige and Hilda. Jack showed me his happiness from my improvement by shocking me when I saw him prowl towards me, his lean, muscular body coming my way purposely and I stood at the garden, watching him with slight fear. Then he stopped prowling when he was half a foot away from me, hauled my hips towards him, his other hand went up to my neck and tugged me as he bent and claimed my mouth in an open mouthed, fiery and passionate kiss.

The fear melted and my chest squeezed for a whole different reason.

Words weren't needed with that kiss but after he broke the intimacy that left me breathless both literally and figuratively, he verbalized his emotion. "I am fucking beyond myself that you pushed through with that shit, sweetheart. I am fucking beyond the moon." He said, leaning his forehead against mine, his eyes scrunched close.

I felt the tightness crawl down to my stomach and my heart warmed. I cupped his cheek and planted a short, chaste kiss to his swollen lips but didn't say anything. There were no words.

A small smile teased my lips from the memory and it felt foreign, it also felt like forever since I last smiled, much more laugh. There was no reason to do them anyway, and nothing was right in my world for a very long time. But I have to believe that there was something out there right? I just didn't know what it was or how far it was from my reach. But it was there, I decided I had to believe that.

My eyes wandered to the window and the magnificent view of the plains made a soft sigh escape my lips.

I was thinking about what to do for the rest of the day when the door opened, my head turning at its direction and saw Jack making his way towards me. I sat and leaned my back against the headboard just as Jack reached me, sat on the bed, facing me and nabbed me by the neck to bring my face close to him so he could give me a kiss.

I accepted that.

"Hey," he murmured against my lips.

"Hey," I whispered back. His lips twitched, it always did, whenever I spoke, his lips would tug up in a half smile.

"You have any plans for today?" He asked and I shook my head. He watched me do that and murmured, "Good."

"What's the matter?" I asked.

"Paige invited Zach and Janice over, if you're not up with that and if it's too soon, I can tell them to come back later when you're ready." He laid it out to me, and I understood that he was worried about me, about my emotional and mental state. But it was unnecessary.

They were friends.

I swept the hair curling at his ears away, watching my fingers touch his lobe and met his eyes. "It's okay, baby. They are friends and I'm ready."

"Are you sure?" He sought affirmation.

I smiled, "Ready as I can be."

He studied my eyes more, looking for any indication that I was pushing myself too hard but when he saw that I was fine, his shoulders relaxed and his eyes softened.

"Alright,"

"Why aren't you in the farm baby?" I asked and his eyes went dark and molten.

"I wanted to see you," he said, lips twitching.

I fought the urge to roll my eyes, "Whatever Jackson."

He watched my lips and then met my eyes again, "I am so Goddamn happy you're talking to me, sweetheart."
