CHAPTER SIX
The sky was blue and clear. It soothed me like a balm. I could taste the saltiness of the cool breeze coming from the sea. The sunlight coated my skin, warming me instantly. Ah, I wish I could just stay like this forever. We were parked near the secluded part of the seaside and the breeze made my hair frizzy but I didn't care. I needed this peace.
"So who was the woman you married?" I asked conversationally without opening my eyes. Jack was relaxing beside me but I could still feel his vigilance. He might be basking under the sun but I knew that even as small as a mosquito would be dead in a second if it landed on me.
The rumble of his voice washed over me when he answered, "Met her when I was stationed in Afghanistan five years ago. She's american."
"You were in Afghanistan?" I laughed, "Wow."
He chuckled, "Too much shit there. Don't wanna go back even if it saves my life."
I snorted, "At least you met a woman."
I could feel him grinning. "Yeah nice woman at first. I was too young too so didn't see it coming when she changed on me. Didn't like my work and the lack of money. Didn't like my responsibilities so she busted my ass over it for two years."
I felt sorry for him. Jack deserved a woman who would make him laugh, challenge him and love him for what he is and what he has. He deserved a woman who would bring him lunch at the ranch while he tended to the horses, just like how he dreamed. "So you divorced her."
His voice grew serious. "No. It was the other way around. I didn't wanna give up you know. Wanted it to work out, tried my hardest to explain to her why I couldn't leave the ranch and why I have that work but she never understood. Maybe she understood but she just didn't like it. I wanted a family of my own but she didn't."
I knew because Jack would never give up on things that he loved. Well, except for me. I ignored the tightening of my chest. "You deserved better than her. It's her loss she gave up on you, didn't see you for who you are." I said looking at him and was thankful for the sunglasses. My eyes were filled with tears. I honestly felt sorry for him. Somehow, we were similar. He thought he found a woman he could share his aspirations with just like how I thought I found the man I would spend the rest of my life with.
He was looking back at me and his eyes bore on mine. There was an intensity in his eyes that made my skin prickle, made my heart pound double time inside my chest. He made me aware of him.
"I am glad you found a man that deserved you." He said quietly and the tightening came back.
I looked away, breaking the spell he casted. "Alex is Alex. Let's get lunch. There's a near seafood restaurant here."
We sat across each other in the seafood restaurant. Alex and I frequented this place. Damn, everything and everywhere reminded me of Alex.
Ramon, the main chef came over our table and gave me a hug. "Ah, my beautiful chiquitita."
"Ramon! I missed you!" I hugged him back, laughing. When he set me down back to my feet, he looked around for Alex.
"Where's your man?" He asked, frowning. "I almost thought you two forgot me already."
"He's not here, Ramon. And I would never forget you of course. Silly." He smiled again and looked over my shoulder towards Jack. "Here, Jack Matthews, a friend of mine back in Texas." I looked at Jack and gestured towards Ramon. "He's Ramon, my husband from a parallel universe." He is hispanic and a little buff, tall too that he was nearly six feet, handsome and tanned. He is also very gay.
