Annabel's P.O.V

" Hey,  Luce."

" How're you doing? " Lucy asked,  lowering herself next to me.

Honestly?  I felt terrible.  Every movement I made caused me to grimace.  Just to breathe was painful enough.

" I'm on the mend, " I told her.

She cocked her eyebrow.

" I'm in pain, " I admitted.

" It'll only get better, " She assured me.

I smiled weakly and took her pale,  freckled hand in mine.

" How's the baby? " I asked.

" He's good, " She nodded.  She was hiding something.

"He?"

" Oh yeah, " She smiled sheepishly,  "I went for a scan, but didn't tell anyone.  Sorry.  Anyway,  they told me that my baby is a boy. "

" Aww! Now you can call him Jesus."

She giggled.  " Annabel.  I'm not calling him Jesus. "

" Fine. But you do have to tell me what you're hiding from me, " I said.

She sighed, running her fingers through her copper hair.

" Carl isn't the father. "

" Oh. "

She buried her head in her hands, clearly ashamed of her actions.  It really hurt to see my sister going through such trouble.  Regardless of how stupid I thought that getting pregnant at nineteen was, I loved my sister and would always stand by her.

"Who is the father, then?" I asked.

" Melanie's brother, Brodie," She mumbled.

" Melanie Wilson has a brother? "

She nodded.

"Okay.  So... Is he good-looking? " I ventured.

She laughed half-heartedly. "Yes. He's gorgeous. "

" Does his personality match his looks? "

" I don't really know, " She admitted,  her gaze resting on her shoes.

I sighed.  " C'mon, Lucy. He's the father of your son.  You need to get him involved. "

" I was, but then you had to get yourself landed in hospital,  which kinda distracted me, " She snapped.

" Ouch."

She shook her head,  regret swamping her freckled features.  "I'm sorry.  I didn't mean that.  It's not your fault. "

" Don't worry about it,  kid. But this thing with Brodie.  I haven't the foggiest as to why I think this, but I reckon there's more than meets the eye, " I told her confidently.

She rolled her eyes.  " Annabel.  I got drunk,  saw Carl kissing another girl,  so I kissed a guy,  who ended up getting me pregnant.  I was drunk.  I didn't know better. I really think that there's nothing more to it than that," Lucy explained.

I nodded slowly, still not convinced.  There was something that I was missing,  but I couldn't quite figure it out.

"Anyway," Lucy said, dragging me away from my thoughts,  "How's mum?"

" I don't know, " I shrugged,  "I haven't seen her.  Neither's Jack."

Lucy's eyes darted around the ward,  before settling back on me.  She bit her lip.

" Should I go and find a nurse?  Maybe she'll be able to tell us something, " She offered.

I smirked,  "Don't move a muscle. "

I called for a nurse,  forcefully jamming the red emergency button.  Sure enough, a few minutes later a nurse with flowing blonde hair appeared,  the colour drained from her face.

"What happened? " She asked,  her eyes darting between Lucy and I.

"Nothing, " I said,  "We need to know what's happening with Felicity Anderson. "

She placed her hands on her hips,  her face regaining its colour quickly.

"Miss Anderson, " She growled,  "How many times do we have to tell you that that button is for emergencies only?!"

I rolled my eyes. " Okay,  okay. Answer the question. "

She shot me a menacing look of disapproval,  before nodding curtly. " I'll ask Doctor Morsley."

She turned on her heel,  her waves cascading down her back like a waterfall of molten gold.  Silence stretched over the ward, meaning the only sound to he heard was the soft patter of the nurse's shoes,  rolling from heel to toe.

Then a thin,  frail lady began to cough violently.  Way to break the silence.

Lucy glanced at the elderly lady,  her nose wrinkling with disgust. I chuckled. " Is that... disgust I see, Lucy?" I teased.

Her cheeks flushed a bright scarlet.  " I'm not used to hospitals and... old people," She confessed.

I opened my mouth to reply, before I noticed the nurse entering the ward once more.

" Doctor Morsley said that your mother was discharged from hospital last night, having only suffered very minor injuries.  She was given a dietary plan to regain her strength and sent home," The nurse reported.

" Why wouldn't she tell anyone? " I whispered, more to myself than to my company.

Lucy frowned.  " That's very unlike mum."

The nurse nodded slowly.  "I'll report back to Doctor Morsley.  We'll get someone out to check on her."

I smiled appreciatively.  "Thank you. "

The nurse returned my smile,  before turning to leave.  "Oh, and Miss Anderson?  You will be discharged tomorrow evening,  providing you continue to improve. "

Lucy grinned at me and I couldn't help but laugh.

" That's great."

But at that moment,  leaving hospital was the least of my worries.
