??? P.O.V

I was getting concerned.  I had felt sickly and tired ever since Melanie's stupid party.  That was three weeks ago. I knew something wasn't right.  So I did the obvious thing:

Take a pregnancy test.

Okay,  so maybe a visit to the doctors would've been a more logical idea.  But I had a feeling that it was something more.  That didn't thrill me.

I took a urine sample,  my heart pounding against my ribs.  I shut my eyes as I waited for the results.

I inhaled through my nose and exhaled through my mouth, trying to calm myself down.  But my stomach just kept churning and churning.

When I finally opened my eyes,  I stumbled backwards.

+

+ meant positive.

No. No. No. NO.

Disbelieving,  I tried the test three more times. Each time it had the same outcome; it was always positive.

I was nineteen!

I checked the time and cursed under my breath. I had to hurry; I would be late for my lecture at University.

I shrugged on my coat and shouldered my backpack, ignoring my complaining stomach.

I arrived for the lecture just on time and slid onto a seat next to Melanie.  She grinned at me in greeting as Mrs Lewis, our geography lecturer,  called for attention.

" Welcome, welcome," she greeted,  smiling broadly.

She had greying hair which was dragged from her pale face into a tight ponytail.  She wore a grey,  pinstripe suit, with a crisp, white shirt underneath.  Her green eyes wore glasses with a thick, black frame, and when she smiled her scarlet lips revealed pearly white teeth .

“ Today, we will discuss the physical geography of Bangladesh," she began.

Melanie groaned as Mrs Lewis- or Jaz, as she was otherwise known-

continued to drone.

" I learnt about this in year seven, " she whispered.

I smiled faintly,  concentrating on the fact that I felt as though I was going to throw up.

"You okay? " Melanie asked,  "You've gone white as a sheet. "

I opened my mouth to speak, which turned out to be the wrong decision,  as I projectile vomited all over Melanie.

" AARRGGHHHH!"

Mrs Lewis stopped speaking and looked up at Melanie,  covered in sick,  and then at me,  pale and dizzy.

The students near Melanie gagged and cried out 'Ewww!', backing away.

"Don't just sit there, girls,  use your common sense!  Go to the bathroom," Mrs Lewis scolded,  before adding,  "I suggest you go home. "

The last comment was directed towards me.

I nodded solemnly and helped Melanie out of the lecturing hall and into the bathrooms.

" I'm so sorry, " I said.

" It's fine.  I'll get over it, " Melanie shrugged, washing her face.

I stood there awkwardly,  not quite knowing what to do.

"I should've guessed that something like that was gonna happen, " she added.

" It's my fault.  I shouldn't've come in."

" D'you want me to come home with you?  I'll wash up at yours and then I'll make sure you're okay, " she offered.

" Melanie, " I began nervously,  " I'm- I-I'm..."

"Yes?" She prompted.

" I'm pregnant, " I murmured.

Silence.

" Who's? "

" What? "

" Who's baby?" she asked softly.

I frowned.  I hadn't thought about...

Of course.  At Melanie's party,  me and my boyfriend, Carl, got a bit tipsy.  We were kissing on the dance floor,  completely mesmerized by one another.  Someone called out for us to get a room.  That's just what we did.

I couldn't remember what happened in that room- I was too drunk. But I could guess.

"Carl's," I replied, not meeting her gaze.

" Oh. That's not so bad. "

" Isn't it?" I whimpered.

"Call him.  Tell him.  I bet he'll be thrilled! " Melanie advised,  smiling.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialled Carl's number.  It rang four times before he picked up:

" Yello?"

" Hi, honey,  it's me."

"Hey! Y'okay?"

" I have something to tell you. "

" Okaaay. Tell away! "

" I'm pregnant. "

" Y-you w-what?"

" I'm pregnant. "

Then the line went dead.

I collapsed onto my knees and wept.
