Hanzo heard the rumble of the truck before it even pulled in the driveway. He couldn't help but quiver with excitement as he tightened his scarf and darted out of his bedroom.
His footsteps echoed in the hallway, causing his brother to poke his head out of his room. The green-haired teen smirked at his brother as he ran past. "Eager, aren't we?"
"Quiet, you," he muttered playfully, snatching up a pair of boots as he went around the corner.
The ravenet hopped down the stairs, pulling his boots on quickly and lazily. On the way down, his hair tie snapped. Cursing under his breath, he hurried back up the stairs for a spare.
A minute later he went back down the stairs, pulling his hair up in a bun as he went. He caught sight of his father in he kitchen reading a newspaper. Silently, he hoped he wouldn't be asked too many questions.
As soon as he reached the bottom, his father looked up. He had a small smile in his face, but it looked forced. "Ah, chōnan. Is that your friend I hear outside?"
The Shimada hummed in response, letting go of his hair tie. He felt it snap into place. "Yeah, that one's mine." He felt the hum of the truck through the floorboards and fought back a grin.
His father flipped the page. "I'm surprised you'd befriend someone like that. He's loud like Genji's friends. I thought you'd be around a quieter crowd."
"Yeah yeah, but this one's... Different." Hanzo glanced out the window, seeing a man leaning against a red, thunderous truck. The man locked eyes with him and waved, a grin on his face. The Asian couldn't help but smile and wave back.
That man was Jesse McCree, his boyfriend.
"How different?" the other Shimada asked, snapping him out of his lovey-dovey state. He then tried to answer that question without sounding like a lovesick fool.
"He's... Very American. Social. Wild. Too cheerful for his own good but optimistic enough for the both of us. He's... Amazing."
He heard his dad chuckle quietly and his face flushed. The ravenet started tugging his jacket on, not meeting the other's eye. "Well, he's here now. I've got to go."
"Do you have to leave so soon?" The elder Shimada glanced up from his paper. "Your friend could come inside, have a cup of coffee..."
"He's from Texas," the son said a little too quickly.
The father tilted his head. "Texans don't drink coffee?"
"Not that, he just..." He trailed off, trying not to give anything away. He'd already said too much as it is. "... Isn't as sophisticated as you."
"Oh, Hanzo, you know no one can be as sophisticated as me." He laughed at this, and Hanzo shuffled awkwardly in place. The teen spared a glance back at his boyfriend and started moving towards the door. "Yeah... Listen, I really have to go. I don't want us to be late." He quickly spun around and started fiddling with the doorknob. "I'll be back in about-"
"Hanzo."
He froze in place expecting the worst. He heard his father sigh and the chair creak, signalling the head Shimada was now standing.
"I know we haven't been on the best terms these last few months..." Footsteps followed his words. "But I just wanted to tell you I'm not going to judge who you hang out with... Or, dare I say, date."
The Asian relaxed some - just some - and let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. He released his grip on the doorknob, waiting for whatever came next.
Nothing did. The room fell quiet, unspoken words of reassurance hanging in the air. He could tell his father wanted to say more, but the words wouldn't come. After some time, the ravenet murmured, "Thank you. That means... A lot to me."
He felt a hand on his shoulder and glanced back, seeing a tight, relieved smile on his father's face. "No, thank you, chōnan."
With that, Hanzo turned the doorknob and stepped out into the cold, winter sunlight. He heard the door shut behind him and let out a shaky breath. One look at Jesse made all those thoughts disappear and his face beamed. In quick, confident strides, he walked up to the cowboy.
"Hey darlin'." The brunet met him halfway and slipped an arm around his waist. "What kept ya?"
"My father and I had a... Conversation," he answered carefully. He noticed the worried look on his lover's face and rolled his eyes. "It wasn't that bad, I promise." He wrapped his arms around the other's neck.
Relief appeared in the southerner's face, then a playful look. "Was it bad enough y'need a kiss to make it better?"
The Shimada tilted his head, a smirk appearing on his face. "I suppose so..." His gaze travelled to the window of his house and he stiffened. His father was watching them.
McCree didn't seem to notice this and started leaning in. Embarrassed, Hanzo quickly clapped a hand over his boyfriend's mouth. "Maybe this can wait until we're in the car..." He felt the heat rising to his face.
Jesse finally noticed they were being watched and pulled away, looking embarrassed. The ravenet saw his father laughing in the window and shook his head, dragging the cowboy to the truck. "Come on, before Genji gets involved in this..."
Deep down, though, Hanzo was thankful that his father was so supportive of him. And he'd continue being supportive of gum for the rest of his life.
