His first class that morning was Defense Against the Dark Arts and he sat in his seat as Moody talked. "Alastor Moody, ex auror, ministry malcontent, and your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. I am here because Dumbledore asked me, end of story, goodbye, the end, any questions?"
No one spoke so Moody continued, "When it comes to the dark arts I believe in a practical approach. But first, which of you can tell me how many unforgivable curses there are."
Hermione hesitated before speaking, "Three sir."
He wrote on a chalkboard, "And they are so named?"
"Because they are unforgivable, the use of any one of them will-."
Moody cut her off, "Earn you a one way ticket to Azkaban, correct." He turned away from the board, "Now the ministry says your too young to see what these curses do, I say different. You need to know what your up against, you need to be prepared, you need to find another place to put your chewing gum besides the underside of your desk Mr. Finnigan!"
Seamus looked stunned, "Oh no way, the old codger can see out the back of his head."
Moody suddenly turned and threw his chalk toward Seamus, "And hear across classrooms." Everyone looked at Moody as he walked between the desks, "So, which curse shall we see first? Weasley!"
Ron jumped, "Yes?"
"Stand." Ron stood, "Give us a curse."
Ron looked away for a second, "Well, my dad did tell me about one, the imperius curse."
"Oh yes, your father would know all about that, gave the ministry quite a bit of grief a few years ago, perhaps this will show you why." Moody turned away and walked to his desk, he took a spider out of a jar and enlarged it before using the curse on it. The spider then jumped onto the desks as well as students, "Don't worry, she's completely harmless, if she bites, she's lethal."
The spider landed on Ron and Malfoy started laughing, Moody looked at him, "What are you laughing at?" The spider landed on Malfoy's face he he started freaking out, "Talented isn't she, what shall I have her do next?" Moody flicked his wand, "Jump out the window?" He flicked his wand again, "Drown herself?"
Moody had the spider move to his hand again, "Scores of witches and wizards have claimed that they only did you-know-who's bidding under the influence of the imperius curse. But here's the rub, how do we sort out the liers?"
People slowly started raising their hands, when Neville did Moody looked at him, "Longbottom is it?" Neville stood, "Professor Sprout tells me you have an aptitude for herbology."
Neville nodded, "There's the um, the cruciatus curse."
Moody spoke, "Correct, correct!" Moody gestured for him to come closer, "Check out a new nasty, and the torture curse." He pointed his wand at the spider, "Crucio." The spider suddenly looked like it was in pain and Neville didn't look too happy about it.
Danny wanted to stop it and Death was just about to move when Hermione shouted, "Stop it, can't you see it's bothering him stop it!"
Moody looked at her, then at Neville and he put his wand down, the spider seemed afraid now and Neville calmed down a little. Moody picked up the spider and walked toward Hermione, "Perhaps you could give us the last unforgivable curse miss Granger." Hermione looked like she might cry as she shook her head, "No, avada kedavra!"
No one spoke, it seemed like some people weren't even breathing as Moody spoke, "The killing curse. Only one person is known to have survived it, and he's sitting in this room."
Moody walked over to him and Death seemed like he'd throw the man across the room, Moody took out his flask and took a drink before moving away. After class he and Ron were leaving as Ron spoke, "Brilliant isn't he, completely demented of course. Terrifying to be in the same room with but he's really been there you know, he's looked evil in the eye."
