Prolauge: The runt

Stripes P. O. V. ( point of view)

I felt the warm bodies of my siblings around me. I couldn't see or hear them but I knew they were there, I smelled my surroundings, it was sweet and musty. Then the scent of milk filled my nose, my insides growled, begging me to eat. I was drawn to the sweet scent of milk. I inched forward using only my nose to guide me, I was so close to the source I could almost taste it. Then I bumped into something, but it wasn't my mother it was furry and a bit larger then me, it was one of my siblings, I moewed but he didn't move, I tapped him with one of my paws but he didn't budge, I tried shoving him but he only flinched, I tried and tried until finally he moved, then I inched forward and bumped into I big furry thing and instantly I new it was my mother. Then I grabbed something in my mouth and began sucking. Then almost instantly the warm milk flooded my mouth and went into my stomach, pretty soon I was full and tired. Then I decided to settle down for a nice nap and soon I was asleep and dreams of milk went thru my mind.

Mothers p.o.v

I screamed in pain and dug my claws into the hay floor of my den. Then shortly after I felled the little wet bundles of fur by my back paws and started cleaning them individually with my soft warm tongue, 1..2..3...4, I counted... WAIT No! A fifth one... a runt. Oh no not a runt I thought my first litter and a runt. Then I herd paw steps coming, they were getting closer and closer " h-hello?" I called out a little scared " hey Chloe, did you do it yet? ar-are they here? Can I come in now?" Asked Leo ( my mate )sounding nervous and exited. Whew it was just Leo, I forgot I sent him outside while I was giving birth. I thought " yes Leo they're here! And you can come in now! " i meowed then he ran in looked at the kittens then back at me with a happy, loving smile then licked the side of my cheek " you did it, you did it!" He said between licks " we did it "I said when he finally stoped licking me, then we nuzzled each other. But then my eyes looked at the kittens and I eyed the runt once more, then my smile faded and a worried sad expression over took my mussel. Leo saw this then asked " what's wrong?" He said in a worried tone, then followed my gaze. Then when his eyes landed on the sleeping runt, then he frowned too. Then he said to me " babe, you know we're going to have to-" "NO!" I screamed " We can't! We just can't !" I said with with tears in my eyes. " Chloe listen,... ! " Leo yelled then he took a deep breath then more quietly he said " I know this is hard for you... but it's either take him away and let him die on his own.... or... it's watch him die and suffer the loss of losing a son .... either way he's going to die!" Leo said. I was was now crying... no, sobbing uncontrollably is more like it ( I was a mess ) the fur on my cheeks were soaked and the salty liquid just kept on flowing from my eyes , but when I finally calmed down a bit and stopped crying, Leo and I had a long argument, then I finally let it go, I let the runt go... but I at least convinced Leo to keep the runt for one more day. Then early the next morning I watched as my baby got carried away " goodbye my baby " I whispered as the runt got carried out of the den,

Never to be seen again.
