"So America huh?"

"Yea." Dan whispers as he hugs his knees and stares out at the slowly churning waves.

Phil tugs one of his hands away from his knees and holds it tightly. "I only just got you though."

Dan's lip quivers and he bites it to keep from crying. Why does this have to happen to him?

"I'm sorry." He whispers.
"It's not your fault don't apologize. Let's just focus on us now."
"Okay."

They go silent again and in the distance thunder grumbles and clouds start darkening.

"We should be getting back." Dan says. He couldn't bring himself to say the word home.

Phil stands up first and then helps Dan.
"So...just split decision huh?"

"All she told me was he 'got tired of her' a real asshole he is."

Phil just nods. Still staring at Dan, starting deep into his soul. Dan just had to look back at him, his glasses reflecting the sad look on his face.

"This is just a high school relationship, nothing serious." He says.

Dan blinks hard. "What? Phil how could you say that?"

The minute the words come out his mouth he sees the actual pain in his eyes and doesn't press any further.

"I love you Dan okay?"
"Okay."

Phil takes his hand away from his and lightly puts his fingertips under his chin, turning his face up. Lighting streaked across the sky. "I wanna hear you say it."

"I-I love you too."

Phil pecks him lightly on the lips. Then deepens it. It was soft and passionate, no heat at all, like Phil was trying to tell him everything he couldn't say out loud by pouring it into the kiss. They kissed for so long, Dan was now on his tip toes and his head was swimming. When they pulled apart, Phil squeezes his cheek.
"I won't forget you okay? I promise. We'll keep in touch."

"I won't forget you either."

The last suitcase was stuffed in the back of the moving truck and Dan shuts the railing. It was pouring. Thunder roared and lightning flashed across the sky.

"Dan come on! We gotta hurry the storm is getting worse!" His mother then slams the driver side door.

Dan looks back at his old house one last time before climbing in the truck. His mother was fiddling with the heat .

"All settled? Didn't forget anything did you?"

Just his boyfriend. "No. I'm good."

"Dan I'm sorry okay? I really wish we could stay but we can't go back to how we were living before, it's not good for you, America has greater opportunities for me, for us."

"I know," Dan says, "let's just go."

"And you can always come back one day and see him, this isn't forever you know?"

"Yea."

Then they drive away. Phil sitting on top of his roof, soaked in the pouring rain, his head hung low. The last image Dan would ever see of him.
