I awakened first.
I was afraid to open my eyes, but then I felt Steven pressed against me. Somehow we had fallen asleep or unconscious, I wasn't sure. We survived!
Was I still pregnant? I put my hand to my womb. I didn't feel any different.
But the silence was haunting, like death or something awful still lingered.
All I could hear was breathing-Brooklyn, Steven and mine. I replayed the terrible memory of that wave in my mind that seemed like an angel of death as it swept over the battlefield, friend and foe alike, almost at random, beings turning to ash with no fire as a cause.
"Mom?" Steven sounded thirsty.
"Yes, I'm here, baby." I whispered, and we hugged tightly. We had survived something, that's for sure. Brooklyn stirred between us, sensing we were awake.
"Do you think Dad is okay?" he asked.
"I hope so." I said with all my heart. "I hope so. We'd better get up. We may have to get out of here in a hurry."
"Okay."
I threw the covers and shield back.
"M-M-Mom--!" Steven's eyes were wide as saucers.
"What?" I looked down at my wedding rings. I took them off to get a better look at them.
The fire inside seemed different. In fact the color had changed. It was more blue than white when I got them reset for the Wakanda wedding. Now they were more white than blue. I took Steven's hand and checked his bracelet. "Yours looks the same as before."
"Mom?" Steven shook his head. "You don't."
"Don't what?"
"Look," he pointed at the mirror in the room. "Look."
I got up and turned toward the mirror. I gasped, dropping the rings, and picked them up as I gazed at my reflection. I couldn't believe my eyes.
My hair and eyes had changed.
My hair was white as snow, like my grandmother's.
My eyes were more like the stone I wore on my hand. What happened to me?
"You okay, Mommy?"
"Oh, God."
THANK YOU FOR READING!
Of course I can't do anything until I see the next Avengers movie. I can honestly say it has been fun and a labor of love to do these two books. I had to study a lot of Marvel Comic as well as Cinematic Universe to make this come together.
This story arc was basically born of the idea of there being a Captain America of color. I knew of Sam Wilson, which was well and good, but I thought, could there be another way? One more interesting? My "what if" imagination sparked and went into overdrive, and this is what I came up with. As I said before, Kymera, Lesedi's mother, was an actual character that Marvel sort of left to oblivion, so that was a nice way to tie in.
I hope you enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed writing these. It is harder work to operate with already established characters and places, but I also considered it a writing challenge. I had to leave all kinds of loose ends and I hope to tie up a lot of them after seeing Avengers End Game.
How about you?
Any ideas of what could happen next here?
The possibilities are endless.
Thank you so much for giving my version of things a chance, and I really want to hear what you think of the story, my writing style, whatever. This is part of how I can grow as a writer, so I really want to hear from you. I also would like to know which book you like best.
Thanks again, and please feel free to read my other stories. I appreciate you!
Hugs,
The Real Chione AKA Nitanni Chionne
