I couldn't believe it.
They were after me?! Why?
Now that the place was clear, I began to let go. I was shooting and damaging some equipment but at least I was getting those creatures. The problem was they were still coming!
I raised my hand and they looked at it. I moved it in a semicircle and their gazes followed it. I looked up.
My wedding ring! The iced fire! That's what they were after! I'd always wondered if It held any power, and now I was sure it did. These creatures were after it, and since I'd only let them have it over my dead body, they were definitely after me.
I kept blasting but there were too many, and I began to wonder if I would be safer outside. I could tell that they were coming from the main entrance which was good, and though the elevator was damaged, it still posed as a way out. I just wasn't sure what to do after that.
A bolt hit my shoulder and I disintegrated the one who did it. The creatures began to form a broad half circle, slowly getting in position to rush me at once. I had to make the jump up when they did, or this was over. With a deep breath, I summoned wind and glided over their heads.
"Mom!"
I looked in shock to see Steven behind them. I glided over to him and tuck rolled behind him and his father's shield. I was about to yell at him, but then I saw that set of his jaw, his frown determined. In that instant I saw so much of his father in him.
"Everybody's safe!" He said as he stood up quickly and threw his Asgardian shield. After bouncing, it hit guards and then cut a huge piece of equipment that fell on almost all of the rest. "Come on!"
"Upstairs!" When I saw Steven's look of alarm, I said, "it's safer than outside!" I brought down part of the ceiling as more came. "DUCK!" Glass shards from the broken window flew, nailing more.
We ran down the corridor to the staircase that went to our wing. We ran through the double doors and barricaded them. We ran down the hall, closing every door softly as we made our way to the master bedroom. Steven came out his room with Brooklyn, and we ran inside.
We locked the door and barricaded it with furniture. Then we looked at each other wide-eyed, breathing hard and trying to calm down.
"Can they tell we're up here?" Steven asked in a scared whisper.
"I don't know!" I whispered back. "They are after the iced fire!"
Steven looked down at his bracelet in surprise. "It's not just a bracelet?"
"I guess not!"
"What if they find us?" he asked.
I looked at the window. "Then we will have to jump out. I will glide us down, okay? Get the bag for the dog."
"I left it in my room!"
"I have one," I whispered, going to the corner where Brooklyn's things were. I slung it over my shoulder and took him. "Shhh....shh." I tried to calm him as Steven went to the window.
"Mom?"
He sounded terrified. I rushed to the window, too.
To our horror, we saw people disappear from the battle field. They just turned to dust. Others screamed in horror. "Oh, my God!" I looked at my son. How could I protect him? "Come here!"
We laid on the bed, and I gathered him close. I put my ring hand at his temple. He put his wrist on my hip. "Now what?" He put the shield over us, and I pulled the covers over that by gripping onto it too.
I didn't know, so I said, "Pray, baby. Close your eyes and pray." We held each other tightly, and hoped no one would let go.
