LESEDI POV
I don't need this.
A whole kingdom is depending on me, and here is Ingemar, acting the suitor want to be husband, here to tell me enough is enough and to go to bed.
I shook my head, a small laugh escaping me. "I'm sure I know my way, but thanks, Ingemar--"
"Milady?"
I looked at Heimdall.
"Getting ready means you must be at your best if anything happens."
I got angry.
"I need to execute your latest orders, too," he added quickly.
I exhaled. "Fine, fine...good night, then. We will meet at dawn."
Heimdall turned to leave but then put a hand on my shoulder. "I've served many, and I can honestly say you are doing well, milady."
I looked up at him. "Thank you."
Within seconds, Ingemar was at my back, and put a hand on my shoulder. "Milady?"
I turned to him, and realized he was already dressed for bed. "Did I awaken you?"
He smiled. "No." We walked down the hall together. "All is going well?"
"Heimdall seems comfortable, but I am not. I am planning for all kinds of things right now, Ingemar. I don't know if Odin is alive-or who is, for that matter. I don't know what will happen with this Hela person--"
"God--"
"Whatever," I exhaled heavily. "and I have the lives of Asgard in my hands." We stopped at my door.
"Have you thought of calling your husband?"
"No." It came out too fast and too angrily. "He is going through some things in Midgard, Heimdall told me. All I can do is send energy."
"Send energy?"
"I can sometimes feel his feelings," I shrugged. "I send him energy, and I can't explain it any better, I'm sorry."
"What happened?"
"What?"
"When you mention your captain, your eyes usually light up," Ingemar observed aloud. "This time I saw was anger and sadness--"
"I miss him, is all." I leaned against my door, slowly feeling for the handle.
"Does he miss you?"
I swallowed hard. "I am sure he does."
"What has he done?"
"What?"
He touched my cheek and then lightly stroked my hair. "He is nothing but a Midgardian, human and weak--"
"As am I, Ingemar!"
"All I'm saying is that you are far apart, and I know most males don't do well away from their mates--"
"Unless in battle--"
"Even then." He came closer, and I froze, looking in his eyes. There was such warmth and longing there. I thought of Steve and felt my heart twist with sadness. "He is only human."
"Ingemar--"
"And he is far away," Ingemar pressed. "Even your son has learned to miss him. Is that good?"
I tore my gaze away. "It is what it is, Ingemar."
He was so quiet I looked back up at him. "You haven't told him about his son--"
"This is a family matter, Ingemar--" I bit out. "And you're not family."
He seemed taken aback, maybe even hurt, but his jaw tightened in what I could only think of as determination. "But I'm still here...here and waiting, hoping, wanting..."
"So am I--" I didn't realize I'd said that out loud till it was too late, the slight tremor in my voice on the last word. I leaned on the door, grateful it opened. "but not for you, Ingemar, I'm sorry. Good night--" I gasped as he caught my chin between his fingers, tilting my face up to his.
He stared at me for a moment, and whispered, "You shouldn't wait long, Lesedi." He then kissed my forehead. "Good night, milady." He stepped back and released me, much to my relief.
I went in my room, and laid across my bed. All was so quiet. I stared at the ceiling, trying to close my eyes against what Aries showed me, shaking my head against Ingemar's offer. Tears found me first, then sleep...
