You were late, again.
You'd been up most of the night trying to finish off these damn reports. Grindelwald had been stirring up quite a lot of problems lately since his recent escape from the clutches of the MACUSA, which had created more aggro for the Aurors of the British and American Ministry.
People were at the end of their tethers from stress and lack of sleep, some only a hair's breadth away from having a major episode. It was a very strained and coffee-fuelled atmosphere in the office, and you were hardly exempt from this pressure bearing down upon your co-workers.
The only one who seemed normal and unburdened was your boss. Theseus Scamander.
As much as you admired the man for his achievements and dedication to his job, you couldn't help but envy his apparent ability to not buckle under pressure.
Today however, you were slightly miffed at him. Since he had been the one who'd asked you to finish all these reports off for him, ready to be delivered to his desk by the morning. It had made your heart sink a little when he'd stopped by your desk the day before and assigned you the task, realising that this meant the date you had planned that evening would have to be cancelled.
It was difficult balancing your love life and work, especially when both demanded equal amounts of commitment.
So begrudgingly you'd accepted the job, the brief smile of gratitude from Theseus making it momentarily seem worth it. If it meant pleasing your boss, you'd do it.
Alright, so you also had a small work crush on the guy, but so what? You never intended to act on it and didn't expect there to be any mutual feelings.
Seriously, the guy had just made you stay up half the night to finish these blasted reports!
This was also another reason you had that date planned, as a way of taking your mind off of a certain tall, fair-haired Auror, who also happened to be your boss and was strictlyoff-limits. Something you had to remind yourself frequently.
Besides, the two of you would make a disastrous couple. Neither of you could seem to stop hurting the other one, accidentally of course.
If it wasn't spilling coffee in Theseus' lap, then he was bumping into you as he dashed around to his meetings and such. One time you had to go get your fingers looked at as a result of you searching under your desk for a misplaced sheet of parchment, which had vital information on it for the case you were currently working. Theseus had noticed you fretting and had offered to help, but when he had rolled your chair out, so he could crouch down beside you, one of the heavy metal wheels hand ran over your fingers.
It had taken everything in you not to cry in front of him, whisking yourself off to get them looked at.
Theseus had been distraught.
You reminisced back to your first day starting in the Ministry, when you had gotten out of the lift and instantly collided into a 6ft something wall of muscle.
"Damn it all!" You'd exclaimed, all your papers and office supplies falling onto the floor. You were angry at yourself for not watching where you were going, too absorbed in gawking at everything around you. You crouched down and began picking up the contents of the box you'd been carrying in front of you. It had been piled-up so badly you hadn't really been able to look past it anyway, but your careless actions had caused the collision.
"I'm awfully sorry about that, here let me help." A voice above you mused. It was a very fruity voice, deep and pleasant to your ears. A pair of strong hands began helping you pick up your quills and large inkpot, luckily none of them had broken on the carpeted floor.
