"Bokuto-san. Will you follow me somewhere?"
"Ok! Where?"
"I'll tell you when we get there."
Akaashi had spent his Saturday at Bokuto's house flipping through photo albums while Bokuto attended cram class. He was going to try trigger Bokuto's memories by bringing him to places his birth parents used to frequently bring him to when he was a child.
After an hour of riding the train, Bokuto and Akaashi finally reach the outskirts of Tokyo city.
"Akaaashiii... Where are you bringing me to?"
"A place Bokuto-san."
"Agaashii! Tell me! Please..." Bokuto bounces around Akaashi trying his best to do puppy eyes.
"You'll find out soon enough. We are almost there."
After 5 minutes, they finally reach the "place". It is a very simple looking park. Green trees, some flowers and a playground milling with kids in the middle.
Bokuto seems to have drifted away. Akaashi watches as tears well up in Bokuto's eyes and slowly make their way down his cheek.
"Bokuto-san..."
Bokuto bursts into tears and crouches down, wailing uncontrollably. This attracted the attention of the children in the nearby playground. Most of them came over to see what had happened.
"Onii-san. Why are you crying? Did the onii-san over there make you cry?" A little girl runs over and asks. Bokuto shakes his head.
As Bokuto continues to cry, Akaashi had to explain to countless of kids on how he did not bully Bokuto and that Bokuto was just remembering something sad from the past.
Akaashi offers a tissue to Bokuto after "chasing" the kids away. "Do you feel better now?"
Bokuto nods and accepts the tissue, wiping his face.
"W...would you like to talk to me about it?"
"Ok."
Akaashi helps Bokuto up and they move to a bench at a more remote area of the park.
"I...used to bug papa and mama to bring me here all the time... Papa would play with me and mama would watch us...with a happy expression. Sometimes she would play with us too..."
Bokuto turns to look at Akaashi. He wraps his arms around the second- year and buries his head in the crook of Akaashi's neck.
"That day was Mama's birthday... We were all very excited. Papa and mama sat in the front row and papa was talking happily...about what we were going to do... All of a sudden...a truck turned in to our lane and zigzagged towards us.... The lane was so small we could not do anything! Papa stepped on the brakes and the truck just hits us..." Bokuto tightens his grip around Akaashi.
"When I woke up, I could not find them... I learnt from Okaa-san that...they had died..." Akaashi can feel Bokuto's tears staining his shirt. He pulls Bokuto into a hug.
"Do you have anything to say to your parents?"
Bokuto nods slightly.
"Bokuto-san, let's go visit them, ok?"
"...o-ok..." Bokuto hesitantly replies after moments of silence.
The next day after school, Akaashi drags a mildly reluctant Bokuto to the cemetry, following directions given by Bokuto's foster parents.
They stop at the family grave.
"Papa. Mama. I've missed you...I'm sorry I've never visited you...I..." Tears once again start falling uncontrollably.
Akaashi lightly squeezes Bokuto's hand.
"I...I'm sorry for trying to for...forget... I... I was scared. It was scary!"
Bokuto drops to his knees, quietly sobbing. Akaashi maintains his tight grip on Bokuto's hand and kneels beside Bokuto, silently paying respects and at the same time, worrying for Bokuto.
Slowly but surely, Bokuto regains his composure. He gingerly rises to his feet, lightly tugging Akaashi along. "Papa...Mama... Yuki-oba...no...Okaa-san and Oto-san takes very good care of me... You don't need to worry about me... I'm happy..."
Seeing Bokuto calm down, Akaashi attempts to let go of Bokuto's hand and leave, giving Bokuto some time and space to be with his parents. However, Bokuto reaches for his hand and grabs it tightly. He takes a deep breath before announcing, "Papa. Mama. Meet my boyfriend and volleyball team mate, Akaashi Keiji." Bokuto softens his tone, "I really love him alot. "
"Please give us your blessings..." Akaashi chips in, deeply bowing. Bokuto follows suit.
A gentle wind blows past.
