Bokuto has no clue on what to get for Akaashi. He has rumaged through catalogues for many different stores but still has no idea.
As 5th December approaches, Bokuto grows more and more desperate. When they both meet at the train station one day to go to school together, Bokuto pops the question.
"Akaashi... What do you want for your birthday?"
"I don't need a present Bokuto-san."
"But Akaaashi! You gave me one. So I have to give you one too."
Akaashi waves Bokuto off.
"Then Akaashi. We are going on a date on your birthday!"
"On a school day?" Akaashi shoots Bokuto a disapproving look.
"Monday. It must be on your birthday." Bokuto says, adamant.
Akaashi shakes his head in disagreement.
In the subsequent few days, Bokuto spends a whole lot of effort trying to convince Akaashi to go on a date after school on Monday. Akaashi finally gives in when Bokuto agrees to finish his homework first.
The day finally arrives.
Despite his usual composed appearance, Akaashi is pretty delighted about his birthday date later in the afternoon. Needless to say, the sparky Bokuto is close to bouncing off the walls.
After school, Akaashi watches in wonder as Bokuto walks through his homework, smoothly and without complains.
He also hurriedly finishes his worksheet and they both make their way to the nearby mall.
Bokuto leads Akaashi to a cafe in the mall and orders a slice of strawberry cake. "For you. Happy birthday, Akaaahshi!" They share the cake. Bokuto is happy that Akaashi seems to be enjoying it.
After dessert, Bokuto waltzes into a department store, pulling Akaashi along. "Akaashii! Choose what you like. I'll buy it as long as I can afford it!"
Akaashi walks around the department store, unsure of what to choose or where to start looking.
"Akahshii! Try this!" Bokuto passes Akaashi a t-shirt with the words "I am the best" printed across it. Akaashi hurriedly rejects the shirt.
After a few more times of Bokuto passing Akaashi weird shirts, Akaashi gives up and scurries out of the clothing section.
However, nothing in that shop amused him. Both of the teenagers head to the next shop - a bookstore.
The moment they get in, Akaashi seems to have caught something at the corner of his eye and just heads there. He picks up a novel from the shelf and reads the first few pages, smiling a little in satisfaction. As Bokuto approaches Akaashi, Akaashi places the book back unwillingly.
They continue roaming around the place.
Since it is Akaashi's birthday, Bokuto takes good looks at Akaashi's reaction towards certain items on display. Akaashi seemed to like the particular book in the bookstore best. He wonders why Akaashi did not tell him.
As they eat dinner, Bokuto excuses himself to go to the toilet. However, he rushes to the bookstore instead. Carefully, he removes the book from its shelf and flips to the back for the price. "2500¥! No wonder Akaashi didn't say anything!" Bokuto still buys that book for Akaashi anyways. Luckily, he had saved some money.
Meanwhile Akaashi still sits at the foodcourt, wondering what took Bokuto so long. Bokuto finally comes back, with a book in hand.
"Happy birthday!" Akaashi takes the book from Bokuto's outstretched hands. "It's..." Akaashi's eyes widen in surprise. "Thank you Bokuto-san... I've wanted this book since it was released." A big smile forms across Bokuto's face.
Bokuto is glad that he made Akaashi happy.
