CHAPTER ONE
note: if you are reading this, I wrote this a while ago, I promise it does get better, I think ;)
Part 1- Hey, my name is McKenzie. I'm a 20 year old girl who lived with her daughter Olivia.I live in La, in the dingiest end of the city in the worst apartment complex in the smallest and cheapest room available.
I have a bad job where I work as an underpayed barista/ waitress. Whatever you would like to call it, it's still a rubbish job (or trashy if you are feeling snazzy).
My mother and father do not speak to me at all because I used to have a loved boyfriend, and we had a lot of fun once. Then I got pregnant and because that was seen as 'unchristian' because I had sex before marriage they simply disowned me like I was done worn out clothing item that had ran out of style. If I'm being honest, i thought Christians were supposed to love all and do to others as they would have them do to you, or whatever it's called.
It's sad I know but, I do have my joy in this cruel world. I have olivia, my 4 year old daughter whom I love and cherish. I used to love and cherish my boyfriend, oh ex, but um. He left me to focus on his future career, and that's why I didn't tell him about Olivia.. Little did I know that this month he would end up finding out that information...
Olivias cartoon was playing in the background of our small apartment as I lifted up and out of the kitchen stool to put away my notepad and pen.
The clock read on the wall"4:50" meaning there was an hour before the sky became a dark black, covering the sky with a cold blanket. I promised olivia previously that I would take her to eat out at eddies which is a small food cafe down the street. We would have to leave shortly before it became too dark and cold.
"Hey via, you ready to go to eddies?" I said averting my eyes to look over at her. Her blonde pigtail brushing off the back of the sofa as she turned to face me. Her permanently blushed cheeks made their way to a smile showing her tooth gap, another thing I miss.
She nodded and laughed "thank you mommy, I'll go get my coat and be a good girl" I nodded smiling at her.
I pulled open a kitchen drawer and pulled out a $20 bill. It was the only money on that drawer. Basically the only money in the house, I recently just payed the rent consisting of $300. It has made me skint(skint- a slang word meaning lack of money. Another word similar is the word plotless)
I walked over to Olivia and zipped her coat "Ready?" She nodded smiling. I took her hand in mine and opened the door, we made our way down the 2 flights of stairs before we reached the coldness of La. I shivered as we walked down the streets, entering eddies.
The usual bell rang as we entered, signalling a customer was in, signalling we were ready to eat.
"Ahh Mckenzie and Olivia" a familiar face appeared around a door frame. It was the cafe owner Daren who is basically my family. I mean he's the best family I have at the moment, obviously apart from my 3 year old daughter.
"The usual" he asked as I took a seat on a wooden chair after lifted Olivia onto the opposing one. I nodded showing we wanted the usual which consisted of "chicken nuggets and chips for Olivia and a small ham sandwich for me" the sandwich was the cheapest on the menu, the only thing I could afford with the given money. Tap water was free so that's what I got as well, Olivia got the apple juice as that's what she loved. Another thing that reminded me of.. I couldn't afford any other fancy drink for myself but I did what I could do. The cafe had people scattered across the seats, their partners seated with them, each had a smile pressed on their face. I wondered about their life, wondered if they had any mishaps or unfortunate events that consisted on their loved one leaving- but then again. That was my story... Olivia smiled as she munched away at the chips, sipping on the juice ever so often. She told me about her new boyfriend she got in kindergarten, wonder if that will last. I smiled at her "and what's his name?" She tilted her hair as f she forgot but she then opened her mouth to speak "Tyler". I mumbled. Soon her plate was cleared alike mine and she was ready to go home so I stood up and took her to the toilet, making sure she watched her hands thoroughly with soap after. She hand friend her hands and walked back out with me to Daren who was talking to a main in a waist coat. "Um here" I said handing him the $20. He looked up at me and took the money. "See you next time kenzie" I smiled at him and nodded before turning to see someone that I would of never expected to see again...
