Chapter 5:
Nori's eyes fluttered open. It was dark. Where was she? The sound of wheels on the pavement brought her to reality. Was she in a trunk?
Her hands were tied behind her back and her legs were tied together. While she couldn't remember the specifics of what happened she knew this was the work of Theo.
A pillow was under her head and a blanket was on top of her. She was very cold. She was still wearing her shorts and t-shirt. He hadn't even bothered to give her warm clothing before he kidnapped her.
She took several deep breathes. The last thing she needed was a panic attack in a confined space. She had to think rationally.
She was in the trunk of a moving car. She was restrained. Most cars had a lever or pull cord inside the trunk to open it.
Her eyes darted around the small space. The sound of her own heart beating in her ears overwhelmed her. She had to be cautious. Prepared.
A small glow in the dark sticker caught her eyes. It showed a pull cord being used to open the trunk, but no cord existed. Blast it! He must have removed it.
Maybe his car had one of those cords that let her into the back seat. If she was quiet enough she could get in and get someone's attention.
But as she listened to the sounds outside she knew they weren't in some place with lots of traffic. Nori felt around hoping her hands would latch on to something. Anything.
Being confined to the trunk was petrifying. But she wouldn't let him do this to her. Not again.
Nori took a few more deep breaths. She tried to calm down, to hold back the tears that were fighting to erupt. All crying would do was tire her out.
Her hand latched on to a thick fabric cord. She pulled it taut and pushed her legs as hard as she could into the seat.
Warmth hit her right away. She tried to wriggle her feet through the passage to the back seat.
"You're awake," said Theo. Her escape attempt had already failed. "Guess I needed a stronger dose. I'll bring you up here."
Theo slowed the car down to a stop. And the interior lights flipped on. She was shocked he was so calm. She heard the door open. She tried to squirm through the path to the backseat before he got to her.
But where was she going to go. He wouldn't bring her to the front unless no one was around. And there was absolutely no way she could outrun him...she couldn't even do that when she was untied.
The trunk opened.
The sun was setting. She squinted up at Theo. He looked different. His hair was longer. It was her black. She needed her glasses to really get a good look at him.
"Please, let me go," she whispered. Her voice felt hoarse. She was shivering.
Theo firmly scooped her and her blanket up in his arms. He was so warm. She instinctively cuddled into his broad chest, trying not to freeze to death.
"You're so cold, darling. I'll warm you right up."
She looked up at him, silently. He'd gotten rid of his glasses. Her eyes darted around. There was no one. She was alone, with Theo.
He carried her to the passenger seat, opened the door and put her inside. She felt a handcuff on her leg.
"Why are you doing this?" she asked. Her throat hurt so much. A cold was probably coming on.
"You've been brainwashed. I'll take care of you, darling. Don't you worry."
"I'm not brainwashed and you're insane."
He slammed her head foreword into the dashboard. She let out a yelp of pain. "Shut up!" He jerked her body back and buckled her in, adjusting the blanket around her. With her hands behind her back she was trapped. She started crying. "I'm not insane. Now, stay still."
Theo slammed the door shut. He closed the trunk and climbed in the car. He looked at her. His hand slipped under the blanket and rubbed her leg, inching further and further up. She whimpered in fear.
"Don't cry, little one. Please, no tears." He was so calm and his voice so soothing. Why was he like this. He wiped the tears from her eyes and planted a kiss on her lips. "You're so cold. I could probably warm you up, right here."
She knew what he was implying and she shuddered at the thought of his touch.
"Please, don't. I don't feel well."
His face hardened. He pulled his hand back and adjusted her blankets all the way up to her neck.
"You just rest, then. We'll be there soon enough."
"Can I have my glasses?"
"I don't think that's..." Theo trailed off as a set of lights pulled up behind them and stopped. "Shit." Theo took something from the car door. It was a gun. "I think that's a police officer. I already shot three police officers today. If you try anything I'll make it four. Is that clear?"
"Yes," she said, softly. He had killed people to get to her. This was all her fault. She felt the tears falling. Theo held the gun at his side, out of sight from the officer.
"Good." He turned to her and wiped her eyes. "Now put on a smile and show him that we're a happy couple."
The officer knocked on the window. Theo rolled it down. "Everything okay?" asked the middle aged officer.
"Yes, my wife was having trouble finding her glasses, so I pulled over to help her."
Nori looked at the man, pleading for him to recognize her.
But he just smiled blankly at them both.
"Where are you guys coming from?"
"We skived off work and spent the day in Boston. It's my birthday."
"Oh, happy birthday."
"Thank you." Theo looked at Nori. She tried to make a neutral face.
Theo reached down and pulled out her glasses. He put them on her face. "There we go. We should get going home. We've had a long day. Thanks for checking on us."
"No problem. You lovebirds have a good evening and drive safe out there."
"We will. Thank you."
The officer walked away. Theo rolled up the window and snatched the glasses off Nori's face, then turned off the interior lights.
"Let's go, little one. I have so many plans for us."
"What are you going to do to me?"
"We're going to start a family. And I'm going to make you remember how you felt for me."
Theo drove off. Nori looked back and saw the officer following them. But the officer left at the first turn.
She should have done more. But if he really killed three officers then that meant everyone protecting her was dead.
"You were such a good girl, darling. I can't wait to show you our new home. You'll love it."
"I hate you," she mumbled.
"Did a year apart already make you forget my rules?" She could never forget his inane rules. They were burned into her brain with every slap, every assault on her body.
"I said, I hate you." She spoke clearly this time.
"You'll feel differently soon, little one."
Nori squinted at the road ahead, afraid. Afraid that he truly would make her think differently.
