Chapter 10:
Nori woke up shaking in fear. She had an awful nightmare. Theo's arms were loosely around her. He had fallen asleep next to her. Still in his jeans and blue sweater. He looked peaceful for a psychopath.
She wriggled out of his hold and blew her nose. Her congestion had all shifted to one nostril. It was disgusting. She opened another bottle of water.
Theo hadn't stirred from his slumber. That was a first. It was probably midday by now. Nori put on her glasses and silently walked to the door. It opened. It actually opened.
She left the room and softly pulled the door shut. There were three other rooms on the second floor. She didn't look to see what they were.
Nori went downstairs. There was a somewhat open layout to the first floor. Another bathroom was at the bottom of the stairs as well as a kitchen and living room. Down the hall was another door. But right in front of her was the exit. The front door.
She could leave. She could walk outside and find someone to help her.
She approached the door, then hesitated. Who else would die if she didn't get help in time? What about if he woke up and noticed her missing? She didn't know how to drive and with this cold and her blood sugar how far would she get.
Everything was against her at the moment. She walked away from the door. She knew Theo wouldn't make it that easy. She went to the kitchen. It was significantly smaller than the one in London. She briefly looked around.
****
Theo awoke with a start. Where was his beautiful Nori? He looked in the bathroom, she wasn't there.
He hadn't locked the bedroom door, but it was no matter, she was not going to get through the front door or the back door, and she was unlikely to get through the garage door. Then again she had learned to pick locks. Not that the locks he used here were easy to pick.
He left the room and ran downstairs. If she got out she'd be in so much trouble. He was careless to leave her free to roam the house, especially in her current state.
He looked in the kitchen, then the living room. Then he heard it. The tellie. He ran to the rec room down the hall. There was Nori, sitting on the loveseat, eating a sandwich and watch a show.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, trying to hide the worry in his voice.
"You were still asleep and I was hungry. I didn't want to wake you." He knew she was lying. But he hadn't told her she had to stay in the room. She had been looking for an escape.
He sat on the arm rest next to her. She had a large pile of tissues on the other seat.
"How are you feeling?"
"Miserable."
He reached down and felt her head. It was still warm, though not as warm as before.
"I'll go get you medicine. What do you want?"
"Dayquil, Nyquil, cough drops. Anything would help at this point."
"The pharmacy isn't close," he said, looking for a reaction. "I'll probably be gone for over a hour." She seemed unphased. "Will you be okay for that long?"
"Yes," she said.
The pharmacy was far, but not as far as he was implying. He wondered what she would do if she thought she could escape.
"I'll leave you be, darling. Don't over exert yourself. I'll be back as soon as possible."
"Okay."
Theo left the rec room and went upstairs. He got his shoes and coat. He went to one of the spare bedrooms and punched in the code on the keypad. He had set it up as an office for himself. It was the only place he could get internet. Inside was a safe. He opened it and got his keys and his phone.
He went down the stairs, two at a time, and called out, "I'm leaving now, I'll be back in about an hour and a half."
If she said anything he didn't hear her. He went to the garage door and pulled out his keys, he undid the first lock, then the second. Then he typed in a code on the keypad. The lock clicked. He opened the door, carefully pressing a small button on the handle, that acted as a final failsafe. He went into the garage and closed the door behind him.
He turned the two locks and waited till the keypad light turned green. The keypad was armed. She was sealed in.
He went to the car and sat in the driver's seat. He turned on his cell phone and opened the security app. Nori was still sitting in the rec room. He watched her intensely.
After about 10 minutes she got up. He flipped through the different cameras and followed her through the house.
She walk to the front door and pulled the handle. When the door didn't open she studied the lock, quickly realizing there wasn't one. She walked into the living room and looked at the large window. There were bars on it. It was the only window in the entire house large enough for her to crawl through.
She went to the garage door next and one look at the door left her defeated. She wasn't going to leave him.he couldn't let her. He needed her.
They would be a family and he would protect her, just like he was always meant to.
Nori walked around the house looking at other windows. Then she looked at the backdoor. She turned the handle but the door wouldn't open. Maybe someday he would allow her to go out there. But she was safe inside.
She walked into the kitchen and looked at the knives. Only butter knives. He kept the sharp knives in a safe on a high shelf.
Nori walked around aimlessly. He was confident that she couldn't escape.
He opened the garage and started the car. He drove to the pharmacy, about 25 minutes away. It was on the edge of the nearest town. The rural area was perfect. It was amazing how a little hair dye, no beard, and a change of fashion could keep people from recognizing him. It also helped that he donned an American accent and wore contacts.
He put on a Red Sox cap and went into the pharmacy. He grabbed a pack of Dayquil and Nyquil. He got cough drops, Advil, and some vitamins. Anything he could think of for his precious girl.
She needed to be healthy.
As he went to the register the girl said, "Weren't you here earlier today?" The girl was young, probably a student. She was very plain. Her name tag said Amy.
"Yes."
"Someone sick?"
"My wife." Even if they weren't married legally, she was his wife in his heart and soul.
"Such a shame. Hope she gets better."
"Thank you."
"Will that be all today? We have a sale on DVDs and all put Christmas products?" She picked up a nearby DVD.
"I think this is all I need." He glanced at the DVD case. It was one of his movies. His face was right on the cover.
The girl put down the movie. "Your total is $55.79." She looked down at the movie and back at him. "You look a little like this guy." She held the movie back up and tapped at his face.
"Really? I hope that's a compliment." She giggled.
"Here's your receipt, have a nice day. Hope your wife feels better."
"Thanks, I do too."
He hurried out of the store. He checked behind him to make sure the girl wasn't looking out the window at his license plate. He didn't need to be recognized. Not now, not here.
He drove back to the house, paranoid that he had been spotted but as usual the roads were virtually empty. He made it back and quickly checked the security cameras.
Nori was in the rec room having a coughing fit. Poor thing. He'd make it better.
