Chapter 15:
Nori woke in excruciating pain. She didn't want to move. She didn't want to see the damage that Theo had done to her.
Finally her eyes fluttered open, ready to face Theo. But to her surprise, she was somewhere else. If it wasn't for the fan in the center of the sky blue ceiling she'd think she was outside.
Where was she? Nori tried to sit up bit quickly realized she was restrained. Her hands were strapped down. She looked around the room as much as she could.
There was a heart monitor attached to her arm. Was she in a hospital? If so she'd never seen a hospital like this.
She looked up at the ceiling trying to figure out what happened. She vividly remembered Theo's assault on her. The pain he inflicted was unlike anything she'd ever experienced.
Finally the door swung open. She couldn't see it very well without her glasses. The man that walked through, however, was not Theo. He was wearing a white lab coat. Beyond that she had no clue.
Maybe she could finally escape.
The man looked down at her, his face still somewhat blurry, but visible enough. He had silver hair and tan skin. He was definitely older than Theo but she was unsure by how much.
His face cracked a wry smile as he realized she was awake.
"Good to see you up, Miss Fintan."
She had so many questions to ask and she wasn't sure which should come first. Where am I? Where's Theo? Who are you?
She opened her mouth but no words came out.
"I'm sure you have a lot of questions. Just relax. You had major surgery."
Major surgery? "What's going on?" she mumbled. Her mouth felt like sandpaper.
The man handed Nori a cup of water with a straw in it. She drank until he pulled the cup away.
"Yesterday you had a large ovarian cyst rupture. Which is why you fainted. Your intestinal tract also started bleeding, likely from the altercation between you and Theo." She wouldn't call it an altercation. She'd call it a savage beating.
"And what did you do? With the surgery? Remove the cyst?"
"Can't do much for the cyst in general. But I repaired the tear in your intestines. You'll be fine now."
"Who are you?"
"Oh, forgive me for not introducing myself, I'm Dr. Henrik Nessbaum. Theo brought you to me."
"And what's going to happen to him? Is he going to jail."
"Hardly. He's in the other room waiting. I'm going to send you back to him once you're safe to travel. What did you think?"
"What!" Her abdomen ached.
"Relax, Miss Fintan. We don't want you to tear your stitches."
"You're going to send me back to that monster. He beat me so hard he caused internal bleeding."
"I'm not here to judge people, just heal them. I cater almost exclusively to the kinds of people who are wealthy enough to buy and sell women. And if I won't heal them, then who will?"
"If you reported Theo you'd get the money they put up for my return. Or information. It's anonymous."
"Last I checked your reward was $10,000. My fee is significantly higher than that and I'd lose my entire client base if anyone figured out I reported Theo. I'd also probably be killed."
"Self preservation isn't very noble, Dr. Nessbaum."
"I never said I was noble, Miss Fintan. Many of my clients are extremely powerful, mafia, government, royalty. The black market for women is massive. You should count yourself lucky."
"The last thing I'd consider myself is lucky."
"We'll, Theo has no intentions of killing you or selling you. In my line of work that's rare. Now you get some rest. I'm sure Theo will want to see you soon."
"I hate you almost as much as I hate him."
"I'm sure, you do. Get well soon Miss Fintan. I hope that we won't have to see each other again. But unfortunately I'm certain we will," said Dr. Nessbaum.
Even if he wouldn't report Theo it seemed he did care for her well-being, for seeing Dr. Henrik Nessbaum again would mean Nori was in need of serious help. And he knew Theo was seriously unstable.
The doctor left her side. Nori was all alone. She hoped that Amy was okay. It was Nori's fault for going along with Amy's plan.
If Amy got hurt or worse, killed, Nori would never forgive herself.
The door swung open again. The distinct clacking of Theo's shoes sent a chill up her spine.
Nori jammed her eyes shut and took a deep breath. When she opened her eyes Theo was looking down at her, worried.
"Darling, I'm so sorry. I didn't take you seriously and you could have gotten seriously ill. Please, forgive me."
Nori was shocked. She didn't expect this from Theo.
His hands gently moved along her arms undoing the restraints.
"Nori, please, speak to me," he whispered. He pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"What do you want me to say?" she murmured. She had no freedom. It was just easier to agree with him if it meant she would save her own life.
"I want you to say you forgive me. Please."
Nori sighed. "I forgive you."
She knew deep in her heart that there was no escape. Theo pulled her small body up into a hug. She hissed in pain but he didn't let go.
"I'll never let anything happen to you, little one. I love you."
Nori felt tears welling in her eyes. Part from the pain and part from the knowledge that she would never be free. In that moment she resigned herself to be Theo's because she knew that the cost of freedom was too high.
She reluctantly returned the hug. "I love you, too," whispered Nori, hot tears streaming down her face.
