Chapter 43:

"This is how it's going to go," snarled Theo. He stood up and jerked Nori up in his arms, holding her off the ground. He held the gun to her head. "Drop the weapon and we're going to go out there." Amy dropped the knife. "Now, Amy, if you'll be so kind as to hand me the keys from my back pocket . . ."

Nori couldn't see anything but she assumed Amy was doing it. Theo moved the gun into his left hand, his arm still firmly holding Nori up. He took the keys in his right and he unlocked the first lock, then the second. He typed a code into the keypad on the door. The thing that had kept them trapped for so long was just open. Freedom was on the other side.

"Amy, open the door, you're going out first." He jerked back, and pressed a gentle kiss to Nori's cheek, as if to reassure her. It made her skin crawl.

Amy quietly opened the door. Outside this house were the police. She had to rely that they would help her. Amy held up her arms and cautiously stepped into the garage.

Theo put his gun back in his right hand, he stepped forward, pressed the garage door opener next to the door, and held the gun to Nori's temple. She let out a little whimper, knowing full well that someone could kill her, whether it was Theo or the police trying to stop him. The door slowly lifted up and the bright, blinding sunlight was all that Nori could see. She squinted her eyes in an attempt to see.

The noise was deafening. Had the world always been so loud? It was probably just that she'd been hermetically sealed inside a house for so long. So much was happening and it overwhelmed her.

Slowly, but surely, her eyes adjusted to the blindingly bright light. There were a lot of people there, a bunch of armed cops, as well as many unarmed officers, two ambulances, and a car with a giant speaker on top. It was a crowd in her opinion, all there to help save them.

"Let them go!" shouted a man through a speaker.

"Amy, you can leave," sneered Theo.

Amy looked back and Nori and mouthed 'I'm sorry.' Nori couldn't blame her as she turned back to the police and ran forward. She was saying something, possibly 'Don't shoot,' but all Nori could focus on was the gun pointed at her head and the half a dozen officers pointing rifles towards Theo.

"Put the girl down!" shouted the man on the speaker.

"You and I are getting out of here," whispered Theo. "Don't do anything stupid."

Nori squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for every possibility.

Amy flew towards the police, begging them not to shoot. A few officers came to her side. Someone covered her in a blanket. They pulled her to the back of an ambulance and she sat there, while an EMT ran vitals. Blood pressure, temperature. Everyone was saying things. She couldn't focus on it all.

"One at a time, please, I can't hear everyone," she begged.

A female officer pushed her way forward. "What's your name?

"Amy Zerger."

"Someone go get me her file." Another officer ran off. "How old are you?"

"I'm 20."

The officers quickly whispered to each other and turned back to Amy.

"Is there anyone else is in the house?"

"A doctor and one of Theo's accomplices, a woman, named Imogen. She's in labor and we locked her in the basement."

"Are you injured?" asked the EMT.

"I'll be fine, please, don't worry about me. You have to help Nori. She's got an infection and she's pregnant."

"We're working on it."

"I have the file," said another officer. "Do you want us to call anyone? Family? Friends."

"My mom. I need to see her."

"If you don't stand down I'll shoot the girl and as many of you as I can before I go out!" yelled Theo at the top of his lungs.

"Wait, what's going on?" asked Amy. Her friend was in danger. She tried to stand up.

"Please, stay seated. We're taking care of it."

"No, I need to see." Amy pulled the blood pressure cuff off her arm and stood up and pushed her way forward. Nori hung limply in Theo's arms. She was the only thing protecting him.

Amy heard a man whisper into a radio, "There's no clear shot."

Theo took a step forward, confident in his movements. There weren't enough officers. They couldn't stop him. Even with the people helping her, there weren't close to enough people. Of course he'd know that Granville's police was severely understaffed.

"Lower your weapons!" shouted a voice in a loud speaker. Amy couldn't see the person in charge. But she knew it was the only call if they wanted Nori alive.

One by one everyone lowered their rifles and Theo pulled open the door on the car he stood next to. He threw Nori's small body into the seat next to him and jumped in the driver's seat, slamming the door.

The car roared to life and drove across the lawn. Guns shot at the moving vehicle before it drove away.

"There's two more people in the house!" shouted the female officer.

"Erickson, Jefferies, into the house. Maya, you and Roberts take care of the girl and get in touch with the FBI. Everyone else, after that car."

"All available units to Mass 57, westbound. We have a black Toyota 86 Massachusett's license plate 44MT 16."
