Chapter 27:
"Wait, what?" hissed Nori.
"Imogen is dating my mom's ex-boyfriend," said Amy.
"How long did they date? Does he recognize you?"
"Clearly he does. He said I looked familiar."
"That doesn't mean anything, how long ago was it?"
"It was five years ago, but I'm pretty sure he'd remember. They dated for like six months, but he was over all the time, trying to play step dad to a teenage girl."
Nori asked, "Do you think he'd help us?"
"I don't know. I barely paid him any mind back then, but I recall that he was a nice guy. He and my mom had an amicable break up. My mom just didn't see a future with him even though he was pretty into her. She was also several years older and it made her feel like a cougar."
"So he seemed nice, but he also cheated on his fiance with Imogen."
"That doesn't make him evil. Just stupid and horny."
"Does he still talk to your mom?"
"They met through work. He works for a gallery and she is a marketing executive for the firm they use. I think she still runs into him once in a while."
"If we're lucky he will run into her an mention seeing someone who looks like you," said Nori.
A knock at the door cut their conversation short. Amy walked toward the door and whispered to Nori, "Pretend that you've been throwing up."
"What?"
"Just do it. Trust me." She did trust Amy. The girl was handling this whole situation much better than she was.
Nori went to the toilet and opened it. She positioned her head to block it from the door and made some well timed retching sounds as Amy opened the door to Theo.
"What do you two think you're doing?" he asked. She could hear the ire in his voice, ready to burst out at any moment.
Nori made another retching noise then pulled the toilet handle and wiped her mouth, hoping to play it off well.
She looked up at Theo with big doe eyes and whispered, "I'm sorry. I started feeling sick and Amy was helping me. Please, don't blame her."
"Darling, have you been vomiting?" She nodded and made a soft whimpering noise. He reached down and felt her head. "You're clammy. I should get you something to eat. And we should probably get a pregnancy test."
He smiled at her, thinking there was a chance that she was carrying his child. Nori could feel the embarrassed blush crossing her face. She let Theo help her up and walk her downstairs.
Theo brought her to the couch. She knew she couldn't be pregnant. At least not yet. But she felt queasy at the thought. The doctor had protected her with that birth control shot.
"Jennifer, what have you got to eat, Lily isn't feeling too well," said Theo.
"Dinner will be out soon. But I have some chips and salsa."
"I'll take those," said Nori.
Imogen handed Nori the snacks. She hadn't realized how hungry she was. She didn't take her blood sugar before she started eating. But that was a detail that Theo definitely wouldn't want getting out. So he probably wouldn't force the issue. In fact it was probably what most people knew about her. Even when the news had ridiculed Derek for believing that Theo was blame they always made a point that Nori was hypoglycemic.
