the teenager's eyes slowly opened, wincing as she was met with the bright lights in the room. her surroundings were unknown and she could hear small chatter coming from the side of the room. her fingers roamed around the white sheets while her eyes scanned the room she was currently in.
"where am i?" her voice soft and cracked as she cleared her throat, still confused of her surroundings. "rosie!" she heard and the feeling of warm hands were placed against her pale cheeks.
"mom?"
"sweetie, it's me!"
"what happened?"
"um, long story short, you found out you were adopted and fainted." her mother bluntly explained, following as rosé's mouth shaped into an 'o'.
"i'm adopted?"
her mother grabbed her pale, dry hands, bringing them closer to her face. "look, i'll explain everything lat—,"
"no, i want to know now, mother!"
"fine," her mother shifted in her position, caressing her pregnant belly. "when your father and i were younger, we wanted a child, specifically a baby girl," she grinned at the teenage. "but when we talked to our doctor, he said that i couldn't have children because something was wrong with my ovulation. we desperately wanted a child and if that meant adopting one, we would do it so, we went a adoption center that was recommended by our doctor and you were the smallest little baby in there. you were only a week old at the time and your father was so determined to have you so, we adopted you." she beamed, intertwining their hands.
"was i the only newborn there?"
"surprisingly, yeah. since that adoption center is so popular, you were the only newborn there, but there were many other children, but we wanted you."
rosé looked down, staring at the wristband and iv needles. she sighed, looking at her condition. "look, rosé, i see you as my daughter, i may have not carried you for nine months, but i've raised you long enough to see your first footsteps, your first words, and see you graduate many of times."
"why didn't you tell me before then?"
"i was scared you would take it the wrong way and not want me to be your mother anymore. i was scared you'd walk away and find your biological parents and never want to see me ever again. i know what i did was wrong and you deserve to know, but i was scared. you were the only one i had after your father left, i couldn't stand to see you leave, too."
the teenager sighed again, staring at her mother's glossy eyes as she knew she was tearing up. "i would never leave you, mom and it's not even possible to not claim you as my mother because your name is on my certificate. i could never leave the woman who has been by my side for the longest. i love you too much to ever do that." she explained.
"really?"
"of course, mom." she chuckled, following as the pregnant woman's eyes lit up. "without you, i wouldn't be the person that i am today. i wouldn't have met lisa or have a little brother on the way."
the woman giggled, wiping the tears that slipped past her eyes. "you don't know how happy you just made me by hearing those words come out of your mouth." she hugged the teenager, wrapped her arms tightly around her waist.
"i love you, mom." "i love you, too, rosie."
"you scared me for a second when you passed out, rosie. i didn't think you'd react in such a way."
"it's like my mind couldn't process anything after that, my heart was vigorously beating, and from there, everything just went black." she recalled the past memories before she was unconscious. that's the first time in her life when she had fainted, well, except when she was younger and agreed to a challenge to see who could hold their breath longer so, maybe not her first time.
"i knew something was about to happen when your face went pale." her mother said.
"well, all that matters is that i'm okay."
the room became silent until rosé finally thought of the loud girl that she oh so much loved. "hey, where's mom and lisa?"
"they headed out to buy lunch, but that was about an hour ago, they should be back by now."
and as if on cue, the two women entered the room with large bags of food, breathing heavily. "we're here, finally!" they placed the food down, staring at the large amount they had bought.
"rosie!" lisa hurriedly ran to the teenager, arms wide open for them to be wrapped around her. the two happily engulfed into one another's arms, savoring the moment as it felt like forever since the last time they had seen each other. "i missed you! you had me worried sick when you fainted!"
"i know."
"how?"
"because i know you, lisa." the teenager stated, gazing into the other's eyes.
"wow." lisa blushed, looking away at the sudden attention. "anyways, we bought you a lot of food. we didn't know what you wanted so, we got almost everything."
"all of this is mine?" she stared at the continuous stacks of containers. her stomach growled just imaging what could be inside those containers. "i'm really craving something sweet."
"well, we have donuts, pancakes with chocolate syrup and whipped cream—,"
"ooh, pancakes!" she beamed, searching for the container with pancakes in it. lisa happily took the container, opening the lid, and placing the meal into rosé's hands. she couldn't wait to devour them as they looked so good, her mouth dangerously watering. she happily picked up the fork, biting the pancake.
"wow, i never believed them when they told me you loved to eat. you're so small. lisa, here, doesn't eat that much." lisa's mother said, staring at the teenager in disbelief as she devoured the pancake quickly.
"i do eat!"
"not much." her mother argued back.
"i—,"
"ouch!" the woman who sat silently in the corner yelled out, startling everyone in the room. she placed her hand on the bottom of her stomach, caressing it gently as it throbbed. to her dismay, another contraction had came. "ow!"
"um, i think we need to call the nurse." lisa's mother stepped outside the room, finding the front desk.
"i think we're about to have a baby."
