CHAPTER THIRTEEN : PART I : BEFORE YOU KNOW IT

I simply didn't get a blink of sleep that night.
No amount of tossing or turning or online reading seemed to do good.

Thankfully,a hospital call saved me from my sleepless trauma.

'Hello, Dr.Reynolds, how may I help you?'

'HelloDr.Reynolds it's me Dr.Lee your name was on The ER call in list, you might have to hurry.'

'Alright I'll be there in about 10 minutes?'

'Okay,sure.'

I hung up with a sigh.
I got ready as quick as I could and drove to the hospital.

Thankfully I got there fast since the roads were empty.

It was 3 am after all.

I parked the car and hurried to the ER.

Dr.Lee was waiting for me.
'Dr.Mel?'
He enquired.

I nodded

'This way.'

'Fill me in till we get there.'

Dr.Lee nodded
'Vitals are kind of steady but his blood pressure is dropping steadily.
He's still unconscious no eternal injuries so I'm assuming its a thrombosis in one of the branches of the carotid artery by other symptoms I saw.'

I nodded and spoke,
'We need to go into surgery immediately if possible channel in a Cardiovascular surgeon as well'
The nurses nodded and hurried.

I turned to Dr.Lee
'How about you assist me?'
He nods and we head to the OR.

After all was done I hurried up and headed out of the ER.

I was greeted by Dr.Lee

'Your team did a good job keeping the patient stable till I got here,thank god.' I complimented.

He nodded.

I continued, 'you are a man of few words aren't you? How about you join me at the cafe? I really need a caffeine boost right now.'

My request seemed to have caught him off guard but he nodded and replied,
'I'm free for now so,sure lets get some coffee you look like you need it ,you look terrible.'

'I know, I know I didn't get a blink of sleep.'

We walked side by side in the almost empty 4 am corridors of the hospital.

Being an emergency doctor was never easy.

You need to be prepared for just about anything.

Not only the worst case scenario patients but also the uncontrollably rude patients.

Like I said ,its not easy.

Dr.Lee seemed he was doing a good job.

And Me,
what was I doing?

Of course I worked hard

but I can't really evaluate myself.

In a world where being a doctor was obviously a noble profession
There's no denying it was easy.

Late nights.
Missed meals.
6+ hours surgeries
And working more hours a week than close to the average.

It was our life.

But no matter how hard it got
To be able to really do something to save someones life or even just make someone feel better in a way no one really can except us doctors,

This,
This is what kept most of us going.

And also
Mistakes.
It happens sometimes.
After all humans weren't created perfect.

But today I almost made a mistake I shouldn't have.

I never let my personal felling get in the way of my professional life but today I almost made a mistake.

I was still shaken by what I saw.

I was lost in thought until Dr.Lee shook me slightly.

'Are you okay?Dr.Mel'

I snapped out of my thoughts and looked at him.

'Yeah I'm good,by the way just call me Mel.' I assured with a smile.

'Wook, oh look we're here, Iced Americano right? Sit down I'll go make the order.'

'Wah,how did you know what I'll order? Are you stalking me?'

Wook smiled and replied,
'I'm too busy for that.I know ,because I got you one last time and you called me a mind reader, remember?'

'Oh yes yes,yeah I remember.'

'I'll be right back'

I nodded and waited for him to come back.

After a while, he returned with our order and we sat silently,occasionally sipping our coffee.

'Hey,Wook?'
I spoke, while playing with my straw.

'Yeah?'

'You noticed didn't you?'

'Noticed what?'

'During the surgery,'

He hesitated but replied,
'Oh that, yes, I did but you recovered fast so no mistakes were made.'

'Yeah but it was close,I'm so stupid sometimes.'

'Not really. As humans its bound to happen. Don't be too hard on yourself'

'I know, I know but maybe I could have avoided it I think.maybe I was tired I don't really know'

'Hey,on the plus side you don't have to talk at the Mortality conference.'

'Oh yes thank God.'

Wook laughed and we continued to speak about random things that happen in the life of us doctors.

We chose this life.

And who's going to live this it not us?
