It came down to seventh-period chemistry. I sat in front of the class working on my table of contents.
There were only five minutes of class left. Jessica and I had been texting the whole period. We planned to meet up after school at the bus ramp and ride my bus.
"When you finish the table of contents go ahead and number the other pages." My teacher announced.
I huffed and stared at my phone. The time seemed like it sat at 2:43 for the longest. There were only two minutes left and I felt like it was an hour.
To make time speed I organized my items and put them in my backpack. The bell sounded and I rushed out of the classroom. I was the first one on the stairs which was great.
The stairs always got so crowded, especially at this time. I reached the bottom of the stairwell and a boy attempting to go up the stairs bumped into me hard.
My nose flared and I turned my head to look, "My bad shawty." he said cheesing showing his red braces and I nodded my head continuing to walk.
Eventually, I made it to the bus ramp where Jessica was standing just outside the doors.
I furrowed my eyebrows "How you get out here so fast?" I asked
"My class was cut short so I was walking around the school." she shrugged.
God, it was about 90 degrees out today. I really needed to get this girl onto the bus before she passed out from a heat stroke.
I motioned her to follow me and searched for the bus before hopping into it. I sat in the front and she plopped down beside me.

I walked inside my house and the smell of cooked meat hit me in the face, "Hey mama!" I yelled and she peaked her head from the kitchen
"Hey, Nene." -She squints- "Oh, who is this ?" She asked waving her wooden spoon
"This is Jessica, we have a project to work on." -my mom raised an eyebrow staring at her attire- "Already? I'm sorry I missed your first day of school baby." She apologized making a pouty face.
"It's okay." I nodded my head forcing a smile.
It was normal for my mom not to be home. She always took long shifts at work or had an elaborate business trip to go on.
"Where's ya brother?" She asked as I made my way to the stairwell
"Oh, he's at Chris's house."
I could sense her rolling her eyes, "That boy is a bad influence." she scolded.
I walked up a few steps, "I'm upstairs if you need me!" I yell.
I walked up the remainder of stairs and turn into my room.
"It's hot!" Jessica fanned herself dramatically.
"Ever thought about taking off the heavy coat and scarf?" I asked reaching for the fan.
She shook her head fast, "Definitely not."
"Hmp." I shrugged.
I knew something was up but, it wasn't my place to ask. That bruise definitely wasn't a hickey.
I put my backpack on the bed and started rummaging through it for the packet.
I yanked it out and sat on my bed with my back propped against the bed board.
"Understand your partner: Guess your partner's favorite thing before you ask." I read aloud.
She looked at me and nodded her head, "You first." she smiled.
