Chris's friends and family gathered in the hospital waiting room. Hakeem and I were eager for the doctor's reassurance. Meanwhile, everyone else seemed unbothered, none of them broke a sweat, they all texted on their phones and took streaks on snapchat. A girl beside me even started a live on Instagram. It amazed me how careless people could be.
I put my hand on Hakeem's shaking leg, "Calm down... It'll be alright." I whispered.
His hands balled into a fist, "We don't know if he'll be ight, and we the only two in this room that give a fuck." He hunched over.
Heels clacked upon the tile and the smell of potent perfume seeped into the room, causing everyone's heads to snap. I stood up, seeing Chris's parents stand in the waiting room doorway. They held their heads high and mugged everyone. They despised anyone poorer than them and considered them 'The Help'. His mother, Tiffany, fanned herself and sprayed Lysol on a seat next to Moani, causing her to switch seats.
Tiffany wore a striped jumpsuit, and a furry coat which I can assure wasn't faux. Her husband, Tod, took a paper towel and wiped off the seat. His white tuxedo hurt your eyes if you looked for too long and his diamond crested grill and chain wasn't any better. He sat down, and Tiffany sat on his lap.
I gulped and walked towards them; I knew it wasn't wise because they never liked me, especially when I was pregnant with Chris's baby. I stood in front of Tiffany with a silly grin plastered on my face. She took her Gucci sunglasses off and put on her Versace reading glasses.
She analyzed me, "Hmp, I see you still dress promiscuous." I sighed and looked down at my outfit. I wore joggers that clung onto me like a second skin and an undershirt that pronounced my cleavage. "What have you done to my son?" She asked, and I bit my lip.
"I haven't—" She put her hand in my face.
"—stop. Where's Tina?" She looked around the room.
I forced a smile, "She's not here as yet."
She was probably having sex with a random now that her apartment was free of her 'beloved' child.
"So the thot comes in place of the baby mother." She chuckled. "Tod, you hear that?"
He looked up from his phone, "No, what?"
"The thot..." She pointed at me. "Comes in place of the baby mother."
He snickered, and my eyes watered. Hakeem came over to my rescue and Tiffany stood with open arms, "Ohhh my favorite boy! Are you okay?" She held his face.
"Yes, ma'am." She hugged him.
I turned on my heel and walked back to my seat. I wiped the tear that streamed down my cheek. If only I could go back in time...
Hakeem sat beside me and I hunched over, "Why she do you like that?" He whispered.
I pouted, "They just don't like me."
"No shit, but why?" He chuckled. "They gone now; you ain't gotta hide yo face." I glanced seeing the empty seat.
"I can't talk about it right now." I looked around the room. "Looks like everybody's leaving."
Hakeem looked at his phone, "Yep, it's been a good two hours" He looked around. "Look at Moani ass sleep."
I snickered seeing her mouth wide open as her head laid on the arm of the chair. I looked at the reception desk across the hallway, "We should just go in, I'm tired of sitting on my ass."
