Catherine's POV
She had thought about her father before, yet it wasn't quite the version that stood before her now. She had grown up fatherless while he fought his battles eternally, whilst his body laid in a mound of dirt. Her mother told her of times with Catherine's father, an army veteran who left for months to fight his countries battles, yet he still held the heart of her mother. She didn't question why her relatives didn't talk about him though- like at all, or why there were no pictures of him in the house.
Yet over the years there was always an answer. Like her mother couldn't bear to look at a photo of her husband after he died in a military mission, so she confiscated any pictures. It made her wonder if a military man was even in her mothers life, maybe there wasn't.
Though as she stared at man that fathered her she couldn't feel a direct sense of emotion towards him. Anger? Sadness? Her mind blurred like a foggy mirror after a steaming shower. She already had no desire to associate herself with "toxic"people in her life, she had done that to deal with her absent father. Villainizing him to give herself a reason why she didn't have one, to make it seem like he was a bad man locked away- locked away in her mind and heart in the depths.
Even though he was her father, she felt nothing. Not a thing to tie herself to him, she looked away, not being able to make herself contain eye contact. "Can everyone clear out please?" She mumbled, yet because of their hearing being better then hers they picked up on what she said nearly instantaneously even if it raised just above a whisper. They also noticed how she gave no acknowledgement to Kral whatsoever.
"Tell me if you need anything." Bhu'ja was the first one to break the ice- so to speak, reaching down and briefly rubbing her shoulder in a matter that comforted her. He was the first to proceed to the door, speaking some things to the others. Catherine heard a low grumble, thinking its either NightClaw because he's salty she's not accepting his help, or the unspeakable Yautja that she refused to look at.
"I will." She'd reply with a somewhat blank voice, even if she was appreciative of what Bhu'ja did no one could tell. Gradually Yautja left the room, it left Kral who lingered in the doorway, she could feel his eyes on her yet refused to look. "Catherine?"
No reply, not even a prominent physical acknowledgement of his presence. Even as she looked away, she could feel herself bite her lip until it burned with pain. He repeated her name, a little louder as if he thought she didn't hear him the first time. She didn't want to face him, it gave off a strong emotion she wasn't ready to face.
She waited, the feeling to talk to him nagged her. Just to know details about someone who didn't exist in her life yet should've had intrigued her a lot. 'Stay in control,' she told herself. 'He doesn't deserve your acknowledgment.' She added, waiting until she heard a frustrated growl and the shuffling of feet.
To make sure no one was there she didn't move for about a straight minute. Eventually she'd slowly turn her head to look back at the doorway, no one. She sighed, leaning her head back and collapsed onto the bed as she clenched her teeth together. "Fantastic." She muttered bitterly, hitting the bed with a closed fist as she groaned loudly.
Jesus crumba I've had no clue what to write. That's the reason for an absence of me. I've also been working on some other books so that's another reason why! I'll try to keep up with updates to like once a week(?)
