Chapter 9

Cassie’s POV

“Conceded much?” I asked Peter from behind, scaring him so bad that his knees hit the café table and his laptop was knocked out of its normal position.

“Gosh Cas!” Peter exclaimed, a hand over his heart while I just smiled at him, holding a pitcher of water as I worked at the café to get some extra money in my pockets. Peter always came over to work on his laptop with pictures that he took of himself, well, Spider-Man.

Peter fixed his laptop so it was perfectly straight again then glared at me. “You know, at least I have a job-”

I was about to cut him off, telling him that I had a job, that I was actually doing currently, but he continued before I could.

“That pays well.” He finished, making me close my mouth, the words dying in my throat because I knew he was write. Peter worked for the Daily Bugle, a huge news company. J. Jonah Jamison, the man that owned the place, had a current obsession with Spider-Man, always saying that he was a menace and no good for the city. Peter worked for Jamison as a photographer, getting pictures of Spider-Man. Who better to get pictures than Spider-Man himself? To make it better, Peter loved photography so he was able to do something that he really loved and could get good money because the company was well known. I however, had to work at a café with hardly enough to compare to Peter’s job income.

“It’s not like I want this job.” I sighed, keeping my voice low so my boss couldn’t hear, my hands lowering  the glass pitcher slightly from my sudden saddening mood. “But it has to do. I need to make money and the café is better paying than most the jobs here.”

“That’s not true.” Peter stated, “If you want to get a good paying job, go to OsCorp!”

My heart dropped in my stomach and I glared at him. “Peter.” I warned him, telling him not to start this argument again, but of course, he didn’t listen.

“Cassie! Honestly! Why won’t you apply there?”

“You know why…” I muttered, staring at the ice floating in the water in the pitcher I was holding.

Peter blinked. “To be honest, I have no idea why.”

“If I apply for OsCorp,” I started, trying not to have my eyes water as that horrible day seemed to lay in from of me upon hearing my friends last name. “I feel like I’d be betraying Harry. Working for his dad would be like spitting in Harry’s face. Mr. Osborn is the reason that Harry’s gone. I’d be betraying him.”

“You know that his dad did it to ensure his future. He wanted Harry to be smart, get good grades.”

“I know but…” I trailing off, my eyes wandering to the floor while my stomach felt weird. “Harry would want me to respect him, and I will; I’ll do what Harry would want.”

            “You don’t know that.”

“And you do?” I asked sharply then my expression softened, “I can’t betray him, Peter…I just… can’t.”

Peter was silent for a while but finally spoke, “Maybe you’re right. We’ll never know unless you ask him, but I do know one thing that he would want.” He asked, making me look up and meet his eyes. “He’d want to you to do something that you really want to do and get good money.”

My eyes dropped.

“Tell me I’m wrong.” He told me, his eyebrows creased in sincerity.

Before I could answer, Ross, my coworker called to me. “Cassie! We need you in the back.”

Rather than answer to Peter, I took the excuse and nodded to Ross in agreement then started to walk away, but Peter caught my hand, making me turn back to him. “Think about it.” Peter begged, his voice soft. He gave my hand a squeeze then loosened his grip on my hand, letting me walk away.

I really wish he wouldn’t have even brought up OsCorp. The truth was, I wanted to work there, desperately. I just felt like I would betray Harry but Peter’s words really did haunt me because, as much as I didn’t want to admit it, Peter was right.  Harry would want me to be happy and do what I wanted.
