Chapter 2

Cassie’s POV
“One more month.” I muttered to myself as I sat, bored out of my mind, in Math while the teacher lectured about…gosh, I didn’t even know. Math had started almost five minutes ago and I was so busy telling myself there was only a month left of school that I didn’t pay attention to a word the teacher was saying. Math was never my favorite, I sucked at it so I had a hard time paying attention.
“Cassie?” My teacher called and my eyes widened as I looked up at Mr. Elean, a strict, 50 year old, grey haired, tall man with a small temper with students that didn’t pay attention.
            “Yes?” I squeaked.
“Can you tell us what problem 12 is on page-” Before he could finish he was interrupted by the door to the class room slamming open to reveal…. I scoffed, sliding into my chair as I crossed my arms over my chest and rolled my eyes when Flash strutted into the class room looking casual, which I suppose it was. Flash always seemed to be late.
“Mr. Thompson.” My teacher scowled. “Nice of you to finally join us.”
Flash didn’t seem to mind and simply shrugged, walking to his seat which was, unfortunately next to mine. He winked to me and I made a disgusted face then looked back to Mr. Elean.
Our teacher looked at Flash with disappointment but simply shook his head and continued to lecture, thankfully getting me off the hook of answering the question. I sighed and started to doodle on my notebook when Peter, who sat in front of me, turned around.
“Dude, Cas,” He said, his voice low. “MJ said that she wanted us to come over later. Can you go?”
I shook my head then whispered back, “I can’t. Gwen said she was going to come over and help me with science homework after school and help me study for the test coming up.”
“Why didn’t you call me?” Peter asked, slightly offended. He was the wiz in school after all, only competing against Gwen.
Shrugging my shoulders I said, “She offered. I didn’t want to bug you.”
Peter rolled his eyes, “Please, Cas, you won’t be bothering me. Tell you what, MJ and I will both come over and you can have double to study time.”
We both jumped when Mr. Elean asked, “Mr. Parker, Mrs. Skipper, care to share?”
“No.” We both said in unison, shaking our heads.
His eyes narrowed at us, “Then I suggest you pay attention, yes?”
“Yes, sir.” We both said and he nodded at us then continued on with his lesson leaving us sighing in relief.
Once the bell rang, everyone scrambled out of their seats. “Don’t forget to do your homework on page 208 in your textbooks!” Mr. Elean called to us, “Just because school’s almost out, doesn’t mean you don’t have to work!”
I put my back pack strap over my head while Peter tossed on his backpack, quickly leaving the room. We started to walk down the hall together since our classes were right next to each other. He had Biology and I had a writing class.
“Oh my gosh, did you see Riker today in gym?” Peter laughed, “He sucked worse than I did!”
“Should you be like amazing at all the athletic stuff now since your ‘Spider Man’.” I whispered, putting quotations around Spider Man.
“I need to keep my secret, Cas. You’re the only one that knows and I want to keep it that way.”
A smile of pride came on my face that Peter trusted me with such a secret. I opened my mouth to say something but Peter suddenly tensed and got a faraway look in his eye. Knowing Peter’s secret, I’ve seen this tons of times. It’s his ‘spidey sense’ which meant something was going to happen soon.
Right on que, a few seconds after Peter’s spidey sense, Flash came over and shoved Peter to the ground, taking his place to the side of me. “Hey Cassie.” Flash smiled and I scoffed then bent down to help Peter who was sprawled out on the floor.
“Go away Flash.” I told him while I pulled Peter up who brushed himself off and scowled at Flash.
“Are you still mad about yesterday?” Flash asked, ignoring Peter.
“No I’m not but I’m mad at you for knocking Peter down.” I glared at him.
“Oh Puny Parker doesn’t mind, does he?” Flash said and punched Peter on his arm, hard causing Peter to rub his arm in pain, rolling his eyes at Flash’s comment.
“Bye Flash,” I said and started to walk away with Peter.
“Bye Cassie! I’ll see you later okay, babe?”
I cringed at the name and just kept walking until we were far enough away and Peter said, “Gosh what a douche bag.”
“Tell me about it,” I sighed then looked at Peter who was trying to move his arm. “How’s your arm?
“I wish I could shove him a locker for a change.” Peter muttered rubbing where Flash had punched.
Laughing I said, “I’d pay good money to see that.”
Peter smiled then put his hands in his pockets as we started to walk to our next classes. Once we finally got to the part where he went to the right classroom and I went to the left we said goodbye and I went to sit at my assigned seat in my writing class.
Writing had always interest me even when I was younger. I always loved to create stories, it was something that helped me unwind and relax. My teacher, Mrs. Peirce, was an absolute genius and was probably my favorite teacher in the school. She had a very unique personality and was very blunt with students. If your paper sucked, she would tell you. Mrs. Peirce was sarcastic a lot too so if you weren’t used to sarcasm then you would absolutely hate her. She was a super nice lady though too. She noticed my ability and pushed me slightly harder than the rest of the students because she said that I had potential.
The class went by quickly as it sadly usually did. Every class that was interesting to me, seemed to zip by and every class that went by slowly were the ones that made me question if those teachers even spoke English. Mr. Elean is a perfect example.
My next class was another one of my favorites. I got to sit at the front office desk and help the secretaries for about an hour. As lame as it sounded, I absolutely adored the job! The ladies that worked in the office really liked me and always told me how good of a job that I was doing. They always joked that if any of them were ever sick that I could easily substitute for them. Honestly, I loved working in the office so much that I almost wished that I could substitute.
While working in the office, I helped kids open jammed lockers, which wasn’t very often since most of the high schoolers just used their backpacks, I answered phone calls, sorted the mail, checked people in and out of school, I called students to the office for objects that they had left home, I took boxes to classrooms, i honestly did a lot but it was still fun for me. There were lots more things that I did but I would probably bore you to death with them.
Opening the door to the office, immediately Mrs. Livingston and Mrs. Redd smiled at me. “There’s our favorite secretary,” Mrs. Livingston said.
I laughed as I walked around the long desk and sat in my chair, setting my backpack down at my feet, immediately getting to work. People came in to check students in and out and every time I greeted them with a smile then told them to have a nice day as soon as they left.
After a man left from clearing an absence, Mrs. Redd complimented me saying, “You are incredible with people, Cassie.”
My cheeks turned a rosy pink, “Thank you.” I said.
“No, Cassie I am serious. You are absolutely spectacular working here in the office. Have you ever thought of being a secretary for a real job?”
I shrugged, “I don’t know. I honestly have always wanted to work for OsCorp, but…”
“OsCorp! Honey, you would do amazing there!” Mrs. Livingston exclaimed, joining in on the conversation. “You would excel working there! You could either be a secretary or you could be a personal assistant if you wanted!”
A soft smile came on my face but it slowly faded. “Thank you, but for now I think I’ll just keep my job at the Café.”  Then I swiveled back into my chair and started to work on the checkout list. A deep, yet quiet, sigh escaped me as I wished that I could apply for OsCorp. My mom and dad told me that it would be a great opportunity, and I agree with them, but…. If I worked for OsCorp… I feel like I would be betraying Harry. After all, Harry’s Dad owns the company.
I closed my eyes from the pain of thinking of Harry. I knew that Harry loved his dad, and I now that his dad loved him, but Harry didn’t see it. Mr. Osborn was concerned about Harry’s future. He only wanted the best for his son, but Harry saw it as his dad trying to throw him away and get ride of him, sending him off to boarding school. It had been that way ever since we were little and I doubt anything has changed now. Though I wouldn’t know, I hadn’t seen, or talked to Harry since that day that he was sent away from New York forever.
Someone walking into the office made me immediately wipe my painful memories and put on a smile, welcoming the lady that had walked in.
Throughout the rest of the day, everything went by pretty normal but I still had a small depressing mood from thinking about Harry. Peter noticed it as we were walking back to our apartments.
“Cas.” Peter said, sounding like he asked a few times before. He probably had because I was spaced out in my own thoughts.
“Hmmm?” I asked, looking at Peter to meet worried brown eyes.
            “Is everything alright?” He asked.
I sighed, knowing that I couldn’t hide something from Peter. “I don’t know.” I admitted. “I’m just kinda off today, just thinking of depressing stuff I guess.”
            “Like what?”
Another sigh came from me and I looked away from the ground in front of me while I walked to meet Peter’s eyes again. “Do you miss Harry?” I asked.
Peter’s expression softened into a look of understanding. “Of course I do.” He answered softly.
“Me too.” I said quietly as I looked down the street wishing that he was still here.
“He might come back.” Peter told me but I dared to hope.
“Maybe.” I muttered as we finally got to our doors to our apartments. I was about to twist the handle but Peter turned me around and hugged me. Immediately I accepted the comfort and hugged him back, a smile and blush not able to leave my face. Something that I would never admit to anyone, and haven’t admitted to anyone, was that I had a huge crush on Peter. But we were friends so I didn’t want to jeopardize it in case he didn’t feel the same way. The little things that he did sometimes drove me crazy; his sweet gestures, his laugh, his smile, his jokes, his hugs, and his eyes. Everything about him was so sweet and cute that someday it was hard to be around him, knowing that nothing would ever change between the two of us.
When Peter pulled back he asked, “Better?”
I smiled and hugged him once more, “Thank you.” I whispered into his chest, breathing in his scent.
“Of course, Cassie.” We pulled away once again and Peter said, “Now remember, we’re coming over later to help you ace that test. We’re going to do it, I promise!”
A real laugh came from me and my depressing thoughts were washed away, “Good luck with that promise. You really shouldn’t made promise’s that you shouldn’t make!”
Peter laughed and I smiled as I walked into my apartment and shut the door then sliding down at it, sighing as I remembered Peter’s warm hug.
My mom’s voice from the other room made me open my eyes and stand up. “Is that you, honey?”
“Yeah it’s me!” I yelled back at her as I walked towards her voice. I found her in her room, folding laundry.
“Have a good day?” She asked as she was folding a shirt.
I smiled, “Yeah it was good.” I answered, remembering Peter hugging me. I shook my head, trying to clear my mind and lesson my blush. Swinging my backpack off my shoulder, I put it on the floor then walked over to the bed, helping with the laundry.
“Great!” Mom said, happy that my dad had gone well.
“How was your day?” I asked, folding my little brothers Spiderman pajamas, if only he knew that the famous Spiderman lived next door to us. I laughed a little at that but mom didn’t seem to notice.
“Oh it was alright,” She answered my question, “Cleaning, cooking, some shopping, same as usual. Never can be more fun then that.”
I laughed then took all of my clothes and went to my room, putting them away then did the same with Josh’s, my little brother.
“Thanks for helping.” Mom said after we had both finished.
“Yeah of course.” I said then remember that everyone wanted to come over. “Hey, I almost forgot. Can Peter, Gwen and MJ come over?”
“I think that will be fine. As long as you go pick Josh up from school.”
“Thanks mom.” I stated, happily and kissed her cheek before walking out of the room to walk to Josh’s school.
The walk wasn’t too far, only about 5 blocks away on the opposite end of my school. It was nice to walk the streets of New York but soon I felt something whoosh past me. Startled, I stopped and looked around, seeing a glimpse of red and blue. A small laugh escaped my lips. “Stalking me?” I asked into the air. If anyone else would have seen me, I would have looked like I was talking to myself but I knew that I was being followed by someone that I knew very well.
Spiderman dropped next to me, walking with me. “I wouldn’t call it stalking.” He said and I laughed.
“Following someone around without their knowledge is stalking.” I said, looked at him, my lips twitching into a smile.
“Technically I wasn’t planning to follow you. I happened to be going this way and saw you so I decided to come talk to you.”
I mocked a gasp and excitement, “Am I important to the amazing Spiderman? No I’m not worthy of walking in THE Spiderman’s presence.”
Under the mask, I knew that Peter rolled his eyes. “Shut up, Cassie.”
“Spiderman knows my name!” I squealed and pretended to faint.
“It might not be a good thing for Spiderman to know your name.” Peter teased. “Maybe you’re on the naughty list.”
“I thought you were Spiderman not Santa.”
            Peter laughed, “I’m totally Santa.”
“Then give me my presents.” I demanded, jokingly.
We both laughed until I changed the conversation as I neared the school. “You might want to leave, unless you want to be attacked by your number one fan.” I said, referring to Josh.
“It’s not my fault that I’m such a good role model and he looks up to me.” Peter joked and I punched his arm before he laughed and shot a web and swung away, leaving me to continue walking towards the school.
When I finally got there, the bell rang and kids immediately burst through the doors. I smiled as I remembered being in elementary school and the pure joy of being free from that prison as soon as the bell rang.
My eyes scanned for Josh and immediately I recognized him by his Spiderman hat. “Cassie!” He called and rushed over to me.
“Hey Joshy.” I greeted, taking off his cap and ruffling his brown hair.
“Hey!” He protested, not for the hair ruffling though, he was used to that. “Give me my hat back! You’re going to break it!”
I rolled my eyes and smiled at his assumption of me ruining his precious hat but gave it back, placing it on his head again to which he took it straight off and brushed it off before placing it perfectly on his head. The ten year old sure was obsessed with his Spiderman merchandise.
Josh started to tell me about his day while we walked home and I mentioned that Peter and my friends were coming over. A huge smile grew on his face at the name of Peter. Josh loved Peter almost as much as he loved Spiderman. If only he knew that the two people he loved most, were the same person.
When we got home, Josh ran to my mom and told her about his day while I walked into my room and sat on my bed, plugging my ear buds in my Iphone, that I bought myself thank you very much, and started to listen to music until everyone came over.
