"Do you want to be a vampire?" Jake asked and I shrugged. "I don't know, maybe. It's just that I'm the one being hunted yet I can't fight back because they're much more powerful than me." Jake stayed silent for a few moments before shaking his head. "Nah, you're gonna stay human." He said and I sighed. Maybe it was for the best.
"Wait wait wait!" Talyn started. "He actually could be great as a vampire, he already knows how to fight and he's probably the smartest person here! We should turn him." She said and Jake said "No".
"But-"
"Talyn..."
Jake's eyes started to glow red again and Talyn stood up straight. It looked like she was trying to move her mouth but her lips wouldn't cooperate. "What are you doing to her?!" I pushed him and he sighed and slumped his shoulders. Talyn loosened up too as soon as Jake's eyes closed and I made my way to her. "I am still the head of this clan and you will do as I say now that you are one of my underlings. That was just coercion but on a higher, more concentrated scale. She felt no pain, I just told her to stand still and be quiet." He said casually and my lip curled into an angry mug. I started to tell him about himself but Talyn stopped me by grabbing my arm.
"I'm okay, I guess he doesn't like to be opposed. Let's not push it any further." She said and I nodded before helping her back to her feet. I turned back to Jake and told him that I was ready to go. He told me that we were just about to leave but he had one more thing to do. He grabbed me, apologized, and threw me far into the distance. I screamed and watched in horror as I flew at what felt like Mach speed towards a large, rocky cliff. As I neared, I felt something wrap around my waist and tug me upwards. Everything was spinning, I didn't know if I was falling or if I was ascending but I knew one thing for certain. I was about to die. Then, to my surprise, a pair of arms caught me bridal style and I latched onto the person that they belonged to.
I opened my eyes and saw that we were falling again and the person was a man. He stayed silent but held me firmly and I thanked God that I didn't die. He landed and I saw another figure at the edge of the cliff looking outward. She held a whip, she must've pulled me up with that and then the man caught me. After a few seconds I started moving again.
"Uh, you can put me down now." I said and he sat me down and took a step back. "Thanks, and thanks for saving me." I thanked them but they said nothing, they just continued to watch a group of people I found to be Jake and the rest. I opened my mouth again to talk but the woman covered it with her hand. "Not another sound, if they hear you, we all die." Fear plunged through my veins and luckily, she didn't remove her hand because I would probably make a sound. "They can't smell you either, sorry about this." She pushed me and I landed in something liquidy. She made sure to cover my entire body in it before pulling me out. I took a breath in through my nose and nearly died. Whatever they pushed me in smelled foul, like shit or something.
"It's gargoyle dung." She whispered and I gagged but she covered my mouth again. I couldn't pry it off so I just sat there before I heard Jake's voice. It was loud and deep, I think he said "come" but I'm not sure. I'm not sure how I can hear him from all the way over here anyway but I couldn't think on it too long because the people that saved me brought me near the edge but still hid me behind them. She pointed to Jake and I looked. One second, there was only one group on the field, the next, over a hundred people in a second group appeared from nowhere. I tried to make out their faces but I was too far away. They looked to be dressed in some sort battle attire and they stood in even spaces of a formation. Then, they vanished as fast as they had appeared. I was released from her hold and then I was clean and in new clothes. And I didn't smell like hot garbage either now so I didn't complain.
"Who were they?"
"The Covenant Peacekeepers."
"What's the covenant?"
"The coalition of different noble blood lines."
"What did they want?"
"My lord probably called them to report the increase in attempts on your life."
"So they can stop the attempts."
"If they feel like intervening, they could wipe out the traitors in less than an hour, I'm sure."
"Oh okay then. Well why haven't they?"
"Because they haven't felt the need to intervene. Now please be quiet."
She seemed irritated so I stood silently next to the large man. He gave me a thumbs up and a slight smile before reverting back to a stoic expression. In the next second I was tackled to the ground and fear took over me so I went rigid. The man on top of me was unfamiliar so I started to panic even more. A scream erupted from my throat and he looked confused. Then, an arm plunged through his abdomen and lifted him into the air. Jake stood over us both with a monstrous expression and Talyn was bearing her fangs not too far behind him.
"What the fuck are you doing?!" He questioned and the man coughed up blood before speaking. "I-I only wan-wanted to see h-him up close... I didn't mean-"
"Enough." Jake interrupted with a tired tone. He then roughly flung the man from his arm and into a tree. "Seeing only requires yours eyes, lay a finger on my beloved again and I shall skin you and have you fed to the gargoyles."
He leaned down and asked if I was okay and I nodded. "He just... Surprised me, is all." He asked if he could help me to my feet and I took his hand.
"Gather all you can, the fight ahead will not be easy. Disperse." He said a few words before every vampire disappeared, leaving us alone. "Come, we are going home."
