I stood on one of the ledges around the Pit, watching the family members of our initiates enter the room, climbing down the raggedy steps. Today was visiting day. Eric had gone to warn the transfers to not seem too attached to their families, just as he had told us last year, and I headed to the Pit with the other leaders, knowing that Dauntless-born's didn't need reminding of anything.
I'd expected to see Four this morning, waiting to keep an eye on the transfers, but he was no where in sight. I'd thought that I'd find him standing by the entry way from the initiates accommodation with Lauren, but nothing.
Eric joined us just as the transfers started to file in, finding their families, or looking disappointed as they realised that they hadn't come. I felt bad for a few of them, I know how upset I'd have felt if my parents hadn't have turned up last year.
My eyes scanned the room until they settled on the woman dressed in grey. The Stiff's Mom. I blinked in surprise as I finally realised that the woman was Natalie Prior and it all clicked into place in my head. Beatrice Prior, daughter of Andrew and Natalie, who worked closely with Marcus Eaton, leader of Abnegation.
I watched as she interacted with her daughter, trying to stop the smile spreading onto my lips. It was nice to see.
And I raised an eyebrow as I finally spotted Four stood nearby, leaning against a railing near the two women.
"Jac?" Jay's voice teared me away from the interaction's going on down in the pit. He was walking towards us and I wondered what he could possibly want right now.
"Yeah?" I questioned.
"You've got a visitor..."
"What?" I frowned a little, why would I have a visitor?
He stepped aside and I almost gasped at the sight of my Mom stood there in her crisp blue dress suit, smiling softly at me, with a baby rested on her hip and folders in her hand.
"Hello, Jacquetta."
"Mom?" I glanced at the other leaders, then my eyes moved back to my Mom. My heart pounded as my eyes settled on the infant in her arms... It was my sibling. But what were they doing here?
"Sorry for the unexpected visit. I figured that Visiting Day would be the least inconspicuous day for an Erudite to turn up." She explained, then turned to the dark-skinned man on my right. "Max, I have some files here for you, from Ms. Matthews."
She held them out to him, and he nodded his head once.
"Thank you." He spoke. "Would you like a more private place to speak with your daughter?"
"If it's not of any inconvenience." Mom smiled at him.
"Of course not." He looked at me and gestured towards the stairs. "Conference room is all yours."
I nodded. "Thank you."
I slid through the leaders and joined my Mom, nodding in the direction that she needed to walk.
"This way." I spoke quietly, and she nodded to show her understanding.
The pair of us began to walk alongside each other.
"Did you not know that I was coming?" She questioned.
"No... Why would I?" I turned my head to look at her. She was frowning.
She opened her mouth to speak, then stopped as quick, heavy footsteps began to sound behind us. I glanced over my shoulder to find Eric walking towards us, his face void of any emotion.
As he reached my side, he slid his hand into mine, our fingers entwining.
"Pleasant to see you again, Eric." Mom greeted him.
