"A year today," Talulah sighed. "I miss him so much."
I watched her lean against the railing above the chasm, looking down into the dark hole as I rocked Ebonie on my hip.
"I miss him too." I told her quietly, a frown furrowing my brows.
"I wonder what it's like where he is... I wonder if it's scary."
"Probably not," I shrugged my shoulders. "I believe that there's some kind of place that the dead gather at after they've passed. I think it's a happy place, where they can get basically everything they want."
She smiled. "That's a nice thought."
"Yeah," I nodded my head slowly.
"Are you still coming tonight?"
"Tonight?"
"... You've forgotten."
"I-" I paused for a moment, then continued. "I haven't forgotten, I just need reminding."
"We're having dessert at mine, after the ranks have been announced?" She looked over her shoulder at me, her brows raised. "How could you forget? I asked you last week."
"I've slept since then," I teased, then let out a quiet sigh. "Besides, I've had a lot going on."
"Hm, about that. Can you tell me yet?"
I shook my head, looking down at the floor. "No, not yet," I told her. My heart sank in my chest, as I realised that it was all taking place tonight. We were going to slaughter the Abnegation like savages in less than seventeen hours. "One day, I'll be able to explain everything."
She sighed quietly, then nodded slowly. "Okay. I'll be waiting, I'll guess."
I half-heartedly smiled, then looked down at Ebonie, shifting her in my arms. I was in charge of her tonight. I was in charge of all children.
Jeanine had stuck me on that task during our last meeting. Max had expressed his worries about me doing heavy duties, because of the crap that Eric had put into his head, and I'd been placed on baby-sitting duty, whilst the others were in on the action.
My responsibilities consisted of making sure that all Dauntless children under the age of thirteen found their way to the training rooms, where I would have to try and keep them quiet. Luckily, a serum had been developed for them too, and I'd have the handheld transmitter to control them.
The plan was to keep them all safe and together until their parents were able to return once the simulation had worn off, but of course by that point, someone will have come to collect me and we'd have headed over to Erudite, the safe-zone. Dauntless was going to be a uncertain place over the next few weeks, and Max had decided that he didn't want us there for the backlash."So, you're coming tonight, right? I can count on you to be there?" Talulah questioned, drawing me out of my thoughts.
"Yeah," I nodded. "But I don't know if I'll be able to stay for long, we've got a few last minute things to do, you know, to do with the initiates turned new members."
She also nodded her head. "Yeah, that's fine."
"Okay." I smiled at her, passing her daughter back to her. "I'll be there."

I'd watched the landscapes earlier on in the day, only really paying attention to two of them. Uriah's and Tris'. And I think that they were lucky enough to get away with it. Four had done a very good job at helping them, and even if the other leader's had figured out their divergence, Angelina's contacts were prepared to help out tonight, a few hours before the simulations started, though the details of it had remained unknown to me.
