Ivy and Gus spent the rest of Art talking about things they had in common and Ivy showed the boy some new bands like KoRn, Tool, and 10 Years. She showed him this song called Defeatist by Hatebreed and it was really good and reminded him of Slayer.
They walked to their next period: Science. As they walked up the stairs, they realized they had every class together.
Ivy and Gus walked into the classroom and the pink-and-black haired boy laughed, causing everyone to look at the sudden noise. He cleared his throat and put his phone in the holder on the wall. Gustav sat at his singular desk with another single desk in front of him that Ivy sat in. He hunched over, put his head on the desk, and had his arms dangling between his legs, his tattooed hands almost touching the ground. He sighed.
Someone touched his newest tattoo of Exit Life, causing Gus to jump from surprise and pain. He looked up seeing Mr. Johnson. "Gustav, why're you wearing that?"
"It was the only thing clean," the boy lied with a straight face.
Mr. Johnson looked the boy up and down. "Uh huh... okay." The teacher sat at his desk across the room from the two singular desks. Ivy turned around.
"Gus, did you just lie straight through your teeth?"
He nodded and winked. "I'm a lovely liar." Ivy just giggled. "But to make him believe me, I wear everything twice."
"Smart." Ivy turned around when Gustav laid his head back down on the desk. The bell rang shortly after, causing the class to become silent.
"Please say here when I call your name." He listed the student, Gustav being first. He got to the 'T's. "Pamela Taggart?"
"Here. I go by Ivy." The girl looked at the older gentleman.
"New?"
"Uh, yes sir," she responded. He made a grunting noise and kept calling role. Ivy looked at Gus, who just shrugged.
"Just ignore it," he advised. She nodded and looked back at her computer.
Gus slid down in his seat and chewed on his chipped thumbnail. He peeled the paint off of it and continued chewing on the--now bare--nail.
The class was loud so Gustav decided to put on the noise-canceling headphones he had gotten for his birthday. He turned them on and he heard the absenteeism of everything. He loved it.
He opened the MacBook he had gotten out of his bag at the beginning of class. He went to his personal account on Gmail. He had gotten a response letter of the job he applied for at a recording studio.
Mr. Åhr, we're sorry but we've hired someone to take the job you applied for this summer. We're sorry for any inconvenience we've caused.
Sincerely, Robert Finley --Assistant Manager of Sunny Street Recording Studio
Gus sighed sadly. He really wanted the job but it was okay since he still had the job interview for H&M. He took off his headphones and put them around his neck. He could hear others conversations--since one person was loud, others were having to yell over them. He looked at Ivy, who had her earbuds in while working on something. He put his headphones back on and took a deep breath and let it out. It was kind of like a sigh but there was no real meaning behind it.
Gus looked at Mr. Johnson with his eyes to make sure he wasn't staring at him. He demurred when people stared, especially at people who were different.
Gustav saw people starting to pack up so he took off the noise-canceling headphones--immediately regretting the decision--and put them in his bag. He packed up completely and threw his bag over his shoulder, looking at Ivy, seeing her staring back.
The bell rang and the two rushed together and walked out of the classroom to go down the hall to Trigonometry.
