Ivy and Gustav walked into the cafeteria and sat at a table. Ivy expected people to sit with them but no one did. "Do you not sit with people at lunch?" Gus was hunched over and mumbled while answering.
"No. I try not to because like... I don't really like people and I can't carry a conversation that well. But I feel like, with you, that doesn't matter." Ivy just smiled. "But somehow, I make people laugh when I do talk and for some reason when people laugh at me, I feel self-conscious."
"Is it weird, I feel the same way when people laugh at me?" Gustav shook his head.
"It's not that weird, but only because you feel like that. I mean you heard what those girls said. You're like a goddess compared to me." Ivy blushed at Gustav's choice of words. "I'm just the emo kid in the background, while you could actually like... have a chance in life. I mean looks wise and career-wise. You could get away with anything."
"Not just anything, because my dad wants me to do something legit or something like that..." Ivy trailed off by looking down. "But I want to follow in his footsteps and be a musician but he's like... telling me not to."
"Well, what else do you want to be?" Gustav pulled out his phone and set it face down on the table.
"Not sure really. I think I want to be something to do with the FBI..." Gus nodded. "But my uncle doesn't want me to because he doesn't want me risking my life."
"Reasonable protest." Gus picked up his phone and frowned. More of the screen had fallen out in his bag.
"That's a very... cracked screen."
"Yeah. I hate being a clutz." He unlocked it. "I've dropped it over a dozen times."
"I dropped my phone a few times but... it was on the corner but it didn't really bust." She pulled out a white phone but Gustav couldn't see what model—until she unlocked it. She had an iPhone XR.
"Holy fubbernuck. That's nice. Then you just see me with my broke ass 6... literally." Ivy laughed then smiled, looking at him. "Ya' know, all I need is to get my screen fixed and I'd be happy. I don't need any of that 'facial recognition' software because that's how the government watches you more than they already do through a normal camera."
Ivy looked at Gus with a look of surprise and interest. "You know, Gustav... you're smarter than you say. You really know a lot just in general."
He shrugged. "It may be all the mushrooms I do... they like... cloud my thoughts or something like that."
Ivy giggled. "You do mushrooms?"
"Yeah... I smoke too, but... like nobody knows besides you and my mom. I never really talk about that type of stuff 'cause I don't um, like have any friends." Ivy nodded. "Wow, I can't believe I just told someone that. And I feel like you're judging me like so hard."
"No... my dad has taught me to try my best and not judge people for their actions, unless the actions hurt me," Ivy assured. "Do you just smoke or do you like smoke weed? Or..."
"Oh, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph no." Gustav shook his head while looking down with a small smirk on his pale, delicate lips. "Just cigarettes."
"Okay. Just making sure," Ivy said with a smile. She turned her attention to her phone.
"Not yet anyway," Gustav mumbled, thanking a higher power Ivy didn't hear him.

The bell rang and Ivy and Gustav arose from their table, following the crowd of students. They walked up two flights of stairs before going back to Coach Woods' classroom. They sat at the same table in the back corner in the same seats. Gustav absentmindedly took off his Never Say Die jacket. A girl walked up to them.
"Hi, Gus." Gustav's glanced shifted to Ivy then back to the girl.
"D-do I know you?"
"I'm Macey. Remember?" Ivy's jaw hung open slightly while looking between Gus and the apparent 'Macey' girl. Ivy's thought about her were to herself, thankfully, because they were mean.
She looks like a pig with that nose. Ivy looked her over. Appears to look like one too.
She snickered, causing Gustav to look at her. She couldn't tell if the girl was staring since she was looking at Ivy the whole time. The girl just walked off. "Why'd you snicker?"
"Thought of something."
"What?"
"It's mean." Gus just shrugged. "My immediate thought was that girl looked like a pig with her nose and she was shaped like one."
Gustav looked at the girl, and tried not to laugh but had to. "AH HA HA!"
He tucked his lips between his teeth to silence himself. Everyone was looking at Gustav. They were surprised to hear something from him of all people. He let his lips go and just looked down, snickering every once and a while.
They sat there with their computers, talking mainly, for the rest of Advisory. Ivy and Gustav stood when the bell rang and walked out of Coach Woods room, Gus waving as he walked out.
They went next door to California History. Mr. Johnson stopped Gus, Ivy waited next to Coach Stoops. "Gustav put on that jacket."
"Wait, what's the tattoo on your shoulders," the math/volleyball coach asked.
"Exit Life."
"What is that suppose to mean?" Coach Winder asked while Gustav threw on his leather jacket.
"It means I wanna die." The teachers just stared at Gus while he and Ivy walked into the classroom.
