"Gus, c'mon! We're gonna be late!" The boy slouched out of his room with messy hair and only in gray briefs.
"Late for what?" His mother gasped.
"Go get dressed! And make it something decent because we're meeting grandmama!" The boy just rolled his eyes and stooped back into his room. He picked out a yellow shirt, an orange jacket, a pair of khaki slacks type pants, and his orange Gucci slides. He added a belt with green socks since they were the only clean ones he could find. He walked out, phone in his hand, Juul in his back pocket.
"I'm ready now."
His mother looked him over with a roll of her eyes. "Put your Juul back on the counter, Gustav," Liza ordered. The teenager's expression went grim.
"But mooooommmmmm!"
"NOW!" She said, stress showing over all other emotions. He pulled it out and placed it on the marble island counter. The brown-haired lady shook her head as she looked her son up and down. "At least you have clothes on."
They quickly got into Liza's Traverse--her allowing Gustav to drive. As soon as the boy got on the highway, they got stuck in traffic. "Dammit!"
"Mama, calm down! I'm sure grandmama will understand." He looked at the time: 1:47. "What time are we supposed to be there?"
"12 o'clock." She answered grimly. The boy bit his lip in the thought of ways to pass the time.
"You wanna listen to my new song?" Liza said and did nothing to respond to her son, but angrily texted her mother that they would be late picking her up. "Mom..."
"Yeah, sure, Gustav."
He connected his phone and played Nineteen.
I don't wanna lose you
I don't wanna hate you
I don't wanna do you like that
Why you gotta do me like that?
"Is this about Ivy?"
"I wrote this before I met her."
I don't wanna go to school I'on like that
Everybody think I'm cool I'on like that
Codeine by the pool while I write raps
Spend money like a fool I'ma make it back
"Gustav, sometimes I think you need therapy."
"I had my own therapist but I was selfish and called her friend a Nazi." He stated, referring to Manuel. His mother looked at him. "Ivy met this new guy named Manuel and he's German but I uh... yeah."
Liza sighed and said, "You're just like your father." Gustav gripped the wheel tighter.
"Please don't say that, mama."
"It's true. He once even tried to keep me away from my cousin since-"
"I said don't talk about the motherfucker!"
"GUSTAV!" The boy banged his forehead in between his hands on the steering wheel. He looked up, seeing traffic was moving. He slowly pressed the gas. "Don't you ever call your father that again."
"Then don't talk about dad... or Oskar." The woman looked at him in shock. "Yeah. I know about him."
"If you don't want to talk about them then we won't."
"Fine."
"Fine."
They drove in silence except for Gustav's music in the background. The mother and son got to the older woman's house and pulled into the drive, parking and getting out. Liza knocked on the door as Gus pulled out a cigarette and almost lit it but his mother caught him. "Put it away now."
He rolled his eyes and put it and his lighter back in his pocket. "Put it away now," he mocked quietly for only he to hear. He saw his grandmother walk out of the house and his mother was helping her approach Gustav. He just smiled. "Hey, grandmama."
"Hello, dear." The pink-and-black-haired boy leaned down and she kissed his cheek gently. He helped her get in the back then got in the driver seat, Liza getting in the passenger seat.
Gus drove as quickly as he could to Longhorn Steakhouse in town next to the mall. They got out and helped Liza's mother into the restaurant. They sat down and the goth teenager sat next to his grandmama while his mother sat in front of him with a rather... upset expression. The boy bopped his head to the shitty country music that was playing in the background as he held his new, black iPhone X Max in his hand, looking through Instagram.
He stopped since people were watching him and his mother told him to as well. He hunched over in his seat and put his phone on the table, swiping with his index finger of his right hand and chewing on his pinky nail of his left hand. "Gustav, has anything happened since we last got a chance to sit down and talk?"
"Uh, yeah. I made a friend, made new music, smoked a lot-"
"You made a friend?"
"Yeah, but we're not talking right now since we... I got in a fight with her."
"Her? Did she like you?"
"Grandmama, have you seen me? The only date I can get is a blunt, my TV, McDonald's, and my bed." His mother rolled her eyes and took a sip of her water. "I don't have a chance even with the girls that look like a horse or a pig."
"Don't say that. You were always more dramatic than Liza."
"I-I know... you've told me once or twice... or every time I see you."

The pink-and-black-haired boy got out of his mother's car and walked inside his grandmother's house. She and the boy's mother walked in after him and his grandmother sat at the table in her kitchen. Gus walked over and kissed her head as he pulled out his phone.
