Rachel stood by the window looking out at New York before she looked down at her phone. Three minutes seemed like forever but forever is what she needed. She looked down at her phone, the word on the screen being Mum. She had been desperate to call her mother but didn't seem to have the time or the guts to do it.

Rachel sighed closing her eyes before pressing call. It may be dark there in New York but London was full of sunshine.

She held the phone to her ear as it rang, unbeknownst to her as Steve walked into the room to get her.

"Rachel? Rachel is that you?" She heard her mother ask in a frantic tone.

"Hi mum..." Rachel greets softly, her tone nothing to what Steve was used to.

"Oh my goodness, Rose told me what happened. Are you okay?" Emily, her mother then asked. Rachel could see her mother pacing around in her mind as she spoke.

"I'm... okay..." Rachel lies as she looked down at the bright lights of New York City.

"Rachel... you're lying." Emily figured scolding her daughter. "What happened?"

"I saw... Things... I can't describe it..." Steve's eyebrows creased in concern as Rachel clearly told her mother about the mission briefly. "I can't unsee it. I can't look at Rose.. or even hear her voice without..." Rachel stopped herself knowing it was too much for her to handle herself as she covered her mouth with her right hand momentarily before letting her hand rest back over her stomach.

"Rach... don't get yourself down." Emily tells her daughter. "I don't know what you saw and clearly you can't even tell yourself what happened. But I know you'll get through this..."

"I know..." Rachel agrees looking to the floor. "I'm not even alone... the team... they love Rose to pieces... she loves them back... and now we have to shut her out for her safety." Rachel tells her mother in a sad tone as Steve leaned against the barrier beside him. He could only agree. The team (apart from Steve and Natasha) had only known Rose for a few hours and now she was stuck with one of the best agents in the world god knows where at this point.

"She's okay." Emily assures, her motherly side showing itself to Rachel like it had many times before. "Rose will be okay. Worry about what you are really here to tell me." Rachel's eyes shut as she let out a sigh closing her eyes before looking back towards Manhattan.

"I don't know if I'm going to make it home." Rachel admits after a brief pause making Steve shut his eyes in almost pain of hearing Rachel seem so convinced she wasn't going to make it.

"Rachel, no, don't say that." Emily scolded her daughter her tone becoming more pained and sad.

"I have to mum..." Rachel disagreed. "I cannot say I'm going to make it when there's a genuine chance I'll die."
