Reader POV

The next morning at breakfast I was one of the early ones, sitting down across from Bertholdt and Reiner at their usual table with a sigh. I picked at my plate of eggs and gruel. I was happy about what happened with Jean, sure, but it was what happened with Eren that was bothering me. I never expected that from him, I'd thought we were nothing more than close friends. I had honestly thought he was gay and liked Armin. Obviously, that wasn't the case. I felt bad for hitting him, really I did, but he'd just stolen my first kiss after I had already told him I didn't think of him in a romantic way. What would become of our friendship now? Would he just try to brush it off and continue as if the whole encounter never happened? Or would he turn on me and stop being my friend because of who it was that did have feelings for? I just didn't know and it was getting to me.

"Are you alright? You look a bit down, (Name)." Bert spoke up after the two watched me just move my food around on my plate for about five whole minutes without eating any of it. I hummed as a simple answer, sounding defeated and upset, and I refused to look up from my plate so I missed the look he exchanged with Reiner. I didn't even look up when a tray was placed down beside me, figuring it was just Annie but then I felt a hand on my shoulder and jumped a little, picking my head up to look over as see Jean. "Jean? Aren't you sitting with Marco?" I asked, not sure why he'd suddenly sat down here instead of his normal table. Yeah, sure we had told each other our feelings last night before that didn't mean he couldn't still sit with his best friend. "You looked upset so I came to check on you."

"I'm okay." I said unconvincingly and turned back to my food to at least try and eat some of it. "No you aren't. Your still upset about Eren, aren't you? You shouldn't be. He deserved to get hit for that. And if he stops being your friend over it then screw him. He's not worth it." I frowned and gave Jean a sideways glance then just sighed heavily. "I know. But I still don't want to lose a friend." "Hey sorry to butt in, but what the hell are you two talking about? This is already weird enough having Jean sit with us." Reiner piped up and Jean looked over at him then back to me. "Eren confessed to her last night and she turned him down. He kissed her. She slapped him and I kinda overheard the whole thing, right down to when she yelled at him that she liked me instead." He explained with a shrug and that usual cocky grin of his. I rolled my eyes and gave his arm a light punch. "Oh look who's back to being playful." He teased and I huffed at him, unable to stop from laughing a little. "Shut up."

My bad mood was gone just like that and I quickly ate the rest of my breakfast before it got too cold and gross. I waited for Jean to finish and then left the table with him, giving Reiner and Bertholdt a short wave. "Today is a free day before the five day survival trip, right?" I asked Jean as we put our trays away and walked out of the mess hall to just take a little walk. He nodded and looked up at the grey clouds in the sky once we stepped outside. "I hope we have decent weather for the survival trip. It would suck if it rained the whole time. It looks like it's gonna rain today." "Yeah. The Instructor said we were going to go in pairs. Who do you think you'll get paired with? I hope if I get stuck with anyone it's Sasha or Ymir." I looked up at the clouds with him then back down at my feet as we walked toward the woods where the titan training course was. "I get why Sasha would be good to have on a survival trip for five days... but Ymir? Why her?" I shrugged and glanced up to catch Jean's confused gaze. "As long as you don't get too close with Christa, she's not so bad. She's a bit rude but she means well. She's pretty clever too. I think she'd do well with survival skills." Jean scoffed and turned to face forward, bringing his hand up behind his neck as he sped up a little to walk ahead of me. "Didn't he say that some girls were going to get paired up with guys since there's not enough girls?" "Hmm... Yeah I do remember him saying that. If I could choose I'd like to get paired up with you. But with my luck I'd probably get paired with Reiner." I laughed a little as Jean looked back at me and rolled his eyes. I didn't really have anything against Reiner, he just wouldn't be my first choice if I could have chosen my partner. "Guess we'll find out tonight when we have to pack." He said and lowered his arms back to his sides, waving one hand in the air as he did so.

I picked up the pace to get beside him and hummed, reaching over to take a hold of his hand and lace our fingers together with a little smile. We technically weren't together but I now knew we both liked each other so something like this was okay, right? He didn't pull his hand away, at least not right away and I saw him smile out of the corner of my eye. After a few more steps into the woods, he pulled his hand away from mine and slung his arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer to him. "So... About last night. Are we, uh... I mean, would you be my girlfriend?" Jean stumbled over his words and looked off to the side to try and hide the dusty blush on his cheek but I caught it. I stopped walking and he did too, giving me a nervous look as he started to pull his arm off my shoulders. I let him and turned to face him directly, looking up into his honey eyes for a second before I stepped forward to wrap my arms around his middle firmly and rest my forehead against his shoulder. "Yeah. You didn't really have to ask though... You could have just put the label on me." "I didn't want to take something without permission like that bastard did." I chuckled a little and smiled at his consideration for the fact that I was my own person and not just something that could be claimed however he wanted, even though I really wouldn't have minded in this case since it was him and we both felt the same about each other. "Can we just forget about Eren and enjoy this moment?" "You're right, sorry." It was Jean's turn to laugh shortly as he hugged me tightly.
