Day 0, Evening

Jean POV

I stood in line between Marco and (Name), arms folded behind me as we stood at ease just waiting for the Instructor to announce who we would be getting paired with for this survival test. I had thought he had pairs planned out already but when he started to list off names, I quickly noticed that he was just going down each row and pairing people up. Perhaps dividing the 200 or so of us up into pairs consisting of girls with girls and boys with boys was just too time consuming. I listened very closely as he reached the third row, my row. Well, at least I'd be paired up with someone I liked either way with Marco to my left and (Name) to my right. "Cadets Hoover and Bodt, pair 26." Shadis checked something off on his clipboard and then walked past Marco to stand in front of me. "Cadets Kirschtein and (Last Name), pair 27." He continued on down the row and I heard (Name) let out a short breath of relief at getting paired with me rather than the girl I didn't really know that stood to her other side.

After finally being dismissed to begin packing for the five days, (Name) and I quickly went off to our respective cabins to gather our personal items such as extra clothes and our ODM gear. We met back in the mess hall where Shadis and some other garrison officers were handing out suvival bags that contained everything else we would need like sleeping bags, tents, compasses and some hunting knives. I walked over with (Name) trailing behind by a few steps and got a bag from one of the Garrison soldiers. Mine carried the tent and sleeping bags while the one (Name) was given carried everything else. "I'll see you bright and early tomorrow. Make sure you get plenty of rest tonight. The first day is bound to be the hardest to get through." (Name) said, putting her backpack over her shoulders with a small smile in my direction. "Yeah, same goes for you. I don't want to carry around your dead weight if you're tired tomorrow." I teased and she huffed, giving a lame shove. "For your information, Mr. Horse, I'm a morning person!" I frowned at the nickname, elbowing her arm which only made her laugh and make a mocking neigh, 'trotting' off away from me toward the girls' cabin. "Whatever. Goodnight." I called after her and she turned back to wave at me.

Day 1, Early Morning

Reader POV

The next morning I woke up a bit earlier than everyone else and since I couldn't get back to sleep I just got out of bed, fixed my sheets and then started to get all of my things together. It really wasn't much, an extra set of clothes and the case with my ODM gear. I stuffed my extra clothes into the backpack I had gotten and set both things on my bed while I got changed into fresh clothing for the day. After getting dressed, I put on my ODM harness and left the cabin to head for the mess hall. By the time I came back from snagging a bread roll for myself and an extra one for Sasha, everyone else was already getting up and ready to go too. I smiled a little and went up to Sasha, slipping her the extra bread roll before backtracking to my bed to sit down and eat my own.

Just as the few slow pokes were finishing up their packing and getting ready, Shadis' loud voice could be heard through the door telling everyone to come out and get in their pairs. I finished adjusting my ODM gear and grabbed the now empty case, slinging my backpack over my other shoulder before rushing out the door to go find Jean. I spotted him standing beside Marco and Bertholdt and jogged over.

"Good morning, (Name)." Marco greeted with a happy smile that I quickly returned. "Good morning, Marco, Bert, Jean." "Hey, (Name)." Bertholdt chimed in with a wave and Jean just grunted, looking sleepy still. "Come on, Mr. Horse, we gotta pair up and get ready to head out." I said, shaking my head with a short laugh as I grabbed his arm to pull him away from his friend. "See you guys in five days!" I called over my shoulder to them and they both waved then turned to each other to begin talking. "Why do we have to leave so early?" Jean complained, just allowing me to drag him along to get in the line of other paired up trainees that was forming behind Shadis' horse. "Oh it isn't that bad. As soon as we find a place to set up our tent, you can take a nap and I'll collect some firewood." "Fine. I guess I can handle that."

Day 1, Late Morning

After a long trek in line with all the other cadets, we were finally told to break off into our pairs and find a place to set up camp. I took out of compass and map and marked the place where we left the path then tried to decide what way we should go to find a place to set up camp. Jean was a bit more awake now that it wasn't so early in the day and the sun was actually up but he wasn't being much help either... At least not with getting out bearings or our heading. It wasn't that difficult though and I put the map and compass away in the side pocket of my backpack then grabbed his hand to lead him off in the direction I'd chosen for us.

We walked through dense woods for about an hour until we came to a steep downward slope with a nice clearing at the bottom and a decent sized stream that ran right through it. "That would work perfectly, don't you think? At least we wouldn't have to go searching for water. And if there's fish we wouldn't have to worry too much about hunting." I said, pointing down between the trees with one hand and patting Jean's arm with the other. "Yeah, that'd be a good spot. Nice going. I'll set up our tent and sleeping bags." He offered, starting down the steep slope carefully and using the small trees as handholds so he wouldn't fall. I followed after him carefully, not wanting to fall and hurt myself or damage my ODM gear which had been much easier to carry while wearing instead of in its case that was currently strapped to the back of my backpack.

Jean got right to work setting up our tent and I set my bag down near his before heading off to get some stones and firewood to create a small fire pit.  So far this wasn't so bad, tiring but the weather was decent, not super hot but not too cold either. And there was no rain. It had sprinkled a little yesterday but it hadn't been enough to create any mud which was nice. At least the ground would be dry for our first night out here in the tent.
