Day 3, Late Morning

Reader POV

That next morning I could barely open my eyes. My head hurt and my body felt heavy and much too hot but yet I soon began to shiver from an unnatural cold chill that ran along my skin. My breath was short and slightly labored as I squinted up at the top of the tent for a moment before glancing over to see Jean wasn't there. Where could he be? It didn't seem that late in the day yet, but perhaps I could be wrong. It was obvious something was wrong with me. I didn't have to feel my forehead to know I had a high fever. That much was obvious in the way it was affecting the rest of my body. I rolled over onto my side slowly and whined as it upset my stomach that had been feeling fine until just now.

As if on cue, the tent flap opened and Jean crawled in to sit beside me, holding a canteen of water. "You want some water?" He asked and reached forward to feel my forehead as I lamely nodded. "Damn... it's higher than it was earlier. Here, sit up slowly." He moved his hand from my burning forehead to my shoulder to help me sit up so I could be able to drink some water. Once seated, he handed me the canteen and frowned a little. I took a small sip of water and then handed it back to him with a little sigh. "You should get some more rest, I'll be just outside the tent if you need anything." Jean stated and moved to leave once he made sure I was laying back down comfortably but I stopped him by grabbing the edge of his sleeve. "Could you please sit with me till I fall asleep again?" I asked in a weak tone and he looked over his shoulder at me for a moment before responding. "I suppose that wouldn't hurt." He sat back down next to me and offered me his hand which I gladly took to hold onto as I closed my eyes again and tried to get some more sleep.

Jean POV

I frowned slightly as I watched over (Name) while she tried to go back to sleep. She looked so terrible with her high fever making her sweat and shiver at the same time. Her cheeks were flushed but her face was much more pale than usual otherwise. I didn't like seeing her like this; it worried me. I don't know what she had come down with but it certainly wasn't good and as she slept for a few more hours without the fever breaking it became clear that whatever it was needed medical attention. A normal cold or flu with a fever would have gone down by now... when I was sure she was still sleeping soundly and wasn't going to wake up right away, I left the tent and slung my backpack over my shoulders, setting off to find Armin or Christa. They might be able to help. And if memory served me correctly, Armin's group had planned to make camp only an hour's walk from where we were.

I picked up the pace when I spotted a tent through the trees, stopping when I reached it to look around the campsite. "Horseface? What're you doing here by yourself?" Eren spoke up from his seat by the lit fire that was being used to roast some fish. Armin turned to look back at me as well and I walked right over to him. "Armin, you’re good with medical stuff, right? You had the best grades in that class. (Name) is really sick... I need your help." "Uh, alright... I guess I can try to help but I can't make any promises, Jean." Armin said and pushed himself up from the ground. Before he or Eren could protest I grabbed his wrist and began to lead him off back to my campsite. "Hey! Wait for me!" I heard Eren call after us as he scrambled to get up and put out the fire to follow. I didn't care too much, more worried about (Name)'s wellbeing rather than if Eren tagged along or not.

It took the three of us a little longer than an hour to reach my campsite and I let out a breath of relief when I saw (Name) still asleep in the tent. I let Armin crawl in to check on her while I was left outside with Eren, waiting. We didn't talk to each other, I didn't really want to get into a fight right now and it appeared that Eren felt the same way. He may have been rejected but at least he still cared about her enough to be worried just as I was. Armin came back out of the tent a while later and handed me a piece of paper. "If her fever doesnt break overnight, you should go find these plants tomorrow and create a paste with them and some water. Have her eat it. If she won't then hide it in some fish or something. It doesn't taste very good." I took the paper and gave the blond boy a hug without really thinking about it. "Thank you, Armin." Armin awkwardly returned the hug then pulled away to start heading back to his campsite with Eren in tow.

Day 4, Wee Hours

In the middle of the night, (Name) shook my shoulder to wake me and I quickly snapped my eyes open, sitting up to look over at her. "Geez, don't scare me like that. What's wrong? It's well after midnight..." I frowned a little at her and she looked off to the side awkwardly so I sighed and leaned over, placing a hand on her forehead to check her temperature. It had gone down significantly and I let out a breath of relief, letting my hand fall back to my side as she looked back up at me. "I'm starving..." She complained and I rolled my eyes. "I'm not going to wait around for fish this late at night. I've still got some wild blueberries I found yesterday while you were laid up with that fever. You want that?" She nodded eagerly and I reached over to my backpack in the corner of the tent to fish out the pouch I'd put the berries in earlier. I handed them to her and she quickly started eating them with a little smile on her face. No doubt she was still sick but at least her fever had broken and she was back to functioning normally for the most part... Not that I was happy to be woken up in the middle of the night just because she was hungry but oh well.
