Safe Like Spring Time

The heavy and oversized jacket you had tightly wrapped around your body was a pathetic way of defending yourself from the extremely frigid air that forced it's way through the gap where the door didn't quite reach the rest of the small building. It was a tiny little shack that you were huddled up in, but it was better than being outside in the freezing weather. No matter how much your body shivered or how much tighter you clutched the jacket, warmth refused to come to you. Deciding that maybe the best thing to do right now might be to try and sleep, you forced your eyes shut and focused on blocking out the loud wind rushing by.

You were ripped out of your too light to be beneficial sleep by the loud sound of the door creaking, signaling that it was being opened by someone. You immediately scrambled to your feet, abandoning the jacket in search of literally anything that you could use to defend yourself. A silent curse escaped your mouth when all you could see was a bunch of empty cardboard boxes that you highly doubted could possibly be capable f providing you defense.

Knowing that whoever was opening the door was mere moments away from getting it fully open and spotting you, your brain forced your practically frozen legs (frozen from fear or from the cold was something you didn't have time to figure out) to carry you to the corner farthest from the door. You held your breath, the intense beating of your heart moving your whole body as you waited in fear for the intruder to reveal themselves.

"Jesus fucking Christ if this damn door doesn't open I'm going to lose my fucking mind!" You furrowed your eyebrows as you registered the raspy voice as belonging to a female, yet you still didn't let your guard down. If the past few months had taught you anything, it was that looks were the most deceiving thing about a person. Keeping that thought in mind you slowly inched towards the door, curious as to who was trying to get in.

Reaching the door, you leaned forward and placed the side of your head and hands on it to see if maybe you could hear more of this strangers voice as she truffled to enter your residence for the night. Unfortunately, since you were probably one of the most unlucky people on the planet, as soon as you rested your weight against the door was also the exact moment that the mystery girl managed to shove the door open. No longer having it's support to lean against, you tumbled into the cold outside and to the feet of the stranger.

"What the fuck?!," she squealed, her footsteps stumbling back a few paces. "Oh fuck. Are you dead? Shit. Shit! What the hell?," she spoke to herself. Had you been in literally any other position you probably would've laughed at how scared she sounded, but it didn't really occur to you that you were just as scared as she clearly was, you just happened to be slightly better at hiding it.

Not wanting to spend even another second in such a vulnerable position, you hurried to get back on your feet as fast as you could, eyes flitting around until they landed on the girl who still hadn't stopped panicking.

"Who the fuck are you?," you demanded, trying to seem intimidating, though as malnourished and exhausted as you were was probably impossible to achieve. Instead of answering your question, the girl just looked at you with shock and curiosity in her eyes. Taking the time to look at her, she didn't really appear to be much older than you. She was wearing several layers of clothing that looked incredibly warm, something you were very jealous of since your jacket was still in the shed.

"Who am I? How about you tell me who you are? What kind of weirdo falls out of a fucking shed?" Her voice now had a shrill tone to it, the raspiness barely being detectable at this point. You rolled your eyes at her, shuffling back into the shed to grab your jacket. There was no way you could continue to face the cold without it.

"I'm not the only weird one. Don't forget that you were the one trying to get in here too," you mumbled just loud enough for her to hear. You tucked yourself back into the jacket and plopped back down onto the hard floor, not having the energy to confront her outside again.

Seeing that you weren't going to get up and that you didn't appear to be a threat, the still unnamed girl invite herself into the little shed, finding that the door happened to be much easier to close from the inside. She sat down against the wall opposite to where you were sitting, silently watching but not saying anything.

"I'm Y/N. I ran away when my moms new husband decided to get a little too close. It's been 5 months and I have no idea where I'm going. Kinda hope I freeze to death." The chances that you were ever going to see this girl again were practically none so you didn't feel as though there was any harm in telling her about yourself. You also had hopes that it would encourage her to open up as well. Her eyes widened in shock but several minutes passed before she spoke up.

"Camila. My parents wanted to move back to Cuba but I figured that I couldn't do that so instead I'm here in this ghetto as hell shed with you. Sorry about your mom and her husband; that's fucked up. Men are trash," she chuckled, taking off one of her jackets and tossing it to you. "Something tells me that you need this more than I do."

Her blasé attitude had lowered your guard a lot, and her lending you the jacket pretty much made her your favorite person. It didn't hurt that she was also super pretty and her clothes smelled nice and clean, something you had missed about living at home. Her jacket was so much warmer than the ratty one you had been wearing, and even though you had expressed your desire to freeze to death, you couldn't help but be glad that this jacket was probably owing to save your life.

A calm silence fell over the two of you. Even though you still didn't know much about this girl, there was no way you could continue to fight against the overwhelming exhaustion you felt. Combined with being much warmer now, it wasn't long until you fell into the most relaxing sleep you'd experienced in a long time.

"Hey.  Hey, Y/N, wake up. It's daytime." It took a few seconds for you to wake up fully and take in your surroundings. Once you remembered where you were and saw that it was Camila who had woken you up, you stood from the ground and stretched to get rid of the kinks from sleeping in such an unforgiving position.

"Oh. Are you leaving?," you asked, not putting much effort into hiding how sad you were at the thought of losing the most normal companion you'd had since running away. Camila merely smiled and reached out to stop you from taking off the jacket she'd given you.

"How about you keep that on, yeah? I think you still need it, and besides, I;m plenty warm," she explained, gesturing to the several jackets she still had on. You nodded but still couldn't wipe away the feeling of sadness. Camila looked at you for a while before cocking her head to the side and hesitating for a bit until she decided to reach out and grab your hand.

"Maybe...maybe you could come with me? It's just, it gets lonely, right? And I have money and you need food, and we both need a friend..." She trailed off, not wanting to force you to make a decision by making you feel guilty.

'What the hell,' you figured, shrugging and squeezing her warm hand. "Are you serious? I'd love to follow you whoever you end up going." You locked eyes with Camila and watched as her gaze traveled down to your joined hands, smiling softly t how happy she looked. There was no doubt that you probably had a stupidly happy smile on your face as well.  You had no idea where you would end up, but something told you that sticking with her was probably going to end up being the best decision you had ever made.
